Hansi Flick Confirms Pedri Injury Blow Ahead Of Villarreal Clash
Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has confirmed a major setback ahead of Sunday’s crucial LaLiga encounter against Villarreal, revealing that midfield maestro Pedri will miss the game due to hamstring discomfort.
The 22-year-old Spaniard has been one of Barcelona’s standout performers this season, enjoying an injury-free run that has allowed him to rediscover his rhythm and influence. However, Flick has opted for caution, choosing to rest Pedri rather than risk a more serious setback.
Why Pedri Will Miss The Game
Speaking ahead of the top-of-the-table clash, Flick admitted his frustration but stressed that protecting Pedri’s long-term fitness was the priority.
“He won’t be there,” Flick said. “I’m not happy about this. He has problems with the hamstrings. He can play, but the risk is too high; if something happens, then he is out for two months.”
The German coach explained that while the injury is not severe, allowing Pedri to play could worsen the issue and sideline him well into the new year.
“We have to take care of him and make sure he gets treatment; he can’t train. It’s impossible to play. We decided we can’t take any risks. It’s the best thing to do right now.”
Eyes On Espanyol And The Super Cup
Flick also reassured fans that Pedri’s absence is temporary, with hopes that he will return for Barcelona’s next fixtures.
“I expect him to come back against Espanyol. We need him for the upcoming matches in the new year and then the Super Cup.”
While the Villarreal game is important, Flick believes Barcelona have enough depth to cope without their midfield engine.
“We have this match against Villarreal, and it’s important, but we have a lot of quality in the team.”
Barcelona’s Midfield Test
Pedri’s absence will force Flick to reshuffle his midfield, giving other players a chance to step up in one of the season’s most demanding fixtures. For Barcelona, the challenge will be maintaining control and creativity without one of their most influential players pulling the strings.
For fans, the hope is clear: short-term pain now to avoid long-term regret later.
