How Chelsea Plan To Pave The Way For Mike Maignan Transfer As Blues Step Up Talks For AC Milan Goalkeeper
Chelsea have reportedly reopened talks to sign Mike Maignan from Serie A giants AC Milan next summer. The Blues are closely monitoring the 27-year-old French international, who will not extend his contract with Milan beyond the end of the season.
Jorgensen Could Make Way For Maignan
Before making a move, Chelsea may need to free up squad space, with young goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen potentially heading out. The 23-year-old Dane, who joined Chelsea in the summer of 2024 for €24.5m (£20m), has made just one appearance this season. Chelsea insiders suggest the club is “seriously” considering an exit for Jorgensen to pave the way for Maignan.
Jorgensen faces added pressure with Denmark’s World Cup 2026 qualification hopes at stake. Failure to secure regular game time could jeopardize his position as Denmark’s No.1, with the national team set to face North Macedonia in the play-offs next March.
Why Chelsea Want Maignan
Maignan has established himself as one of Europe’s top goalkeepers, excelling with AC Milan and France. He even wore the captain’s armband for Les Bleus in October in the absence of Kylian Mbappé. France coach Didier Deschamps praised the stopper:
“Mike is a leader. The fact that he has been able to play so many matches means he is solid. He is a great competitor, even in training. He is a workaholic, sometimes a little too much, but that’s how he is.”
Maignan himself is confident about his abilities, telling GQ Italia:
“I only focus on myself. I know my potential. I believe in myself. I’ve worked really hard to get where I am. I don’t feel I’m a spectacular keeper. I try to do things in the simplest way possible.”
Premier League Move On The Horizon
With Chelsea eager to bolster their goalkeeping ranks, a deal for Maignan could be a major statement signing. Juventus are also reportedly interested, but Chelsea are moving decisively to secure the France No.1, while preparing the squad to accommodate the high-profile transfer.
