Kenny Tete Tips Calvin Bassey For Bigger Stage After Fulham Comeback
Calvin Bassey’s Time At Fulham Might Just Be The Beginning Of Something Bigger — At Least, That’s What His Teammate Kenny Tete Thinks.
Once an Ajax outcast, Bassey has fought his way back into top form in West London, turning into one of the Premier League’s most solid and fearless defenders. His journey from criticism in Amsterdam to confidence at Craven Cottage is the kind of football comeback story fans love.
Speaking to Voetbal Primeur, Tete didn’t hold back his admiration for the Nigerian powerhouse.
“He’s a tank, a fighter,” Tete said. “When he came here, I thought things weren’t looking good at Ajax, but maybe it just wasn’t the right fit. He’s a perfect fit here. Everyone loves him. Fulham isn’t his final destination.”
That last part — “Fulham isn’t his final destination” — says a lot.
Since joining Fulham for €22.5 million in 2023, Bassey has rediscovered the form that made him a sensation at Rangers. His powerful defending, work rate, and growing leadership on the pitch have made him a pillar in Marco Silva’s side.
Of course, it hasn’t been flawless. A recent mistake that led to a goal in Fulham’s 2–1 defeat to Newcastle tied him for the most defensive errors leading to goals this season. But Silva’s response showed how much faith the manager has in him.
“Mistakes are part of the game,” Silva said. “What matters is how you react. Calvin knows what went wrong, but I was pleased with the way he responded afterwards.”
And respond, he did.
Bassey continues to show grit and growth, proving that he’s not just learning from his errors but evolving into the complete defender many expected him to become.
With Nigeria’s Super Eagles gearing up for a crucial World Cup playoff against Gabon, fans will be hoping for the same fire, focus, and fearlessness that’s making him one of the Premier League’s most valuable African defenders.
Whether his next chapter takes him to a Champions League club or even a European giant, one thing’s certain — Calvin Bassey’s story is still being written, and Fulham might just be the turning point.
