Lyle Foster confident Bafana Bafana can still qualify for 2026 FIFA World Cup
Despite dropping crucial points against Zimbabwe, South Africa’s star forward Lyle Foster remains optimistic that Bafana Bafana can still book their ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Bafana Bafana were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by the Warriors in Durban last Friday — a result that means their qualification fate no longer lies entirely in their own hands.
To secure a spot at the mundial, South Africa must beat Rwanda in their final Group C fixture on Tuesday, while hoping Nigeria overcomes Benin in Uyo. Alternatively, a draw between Nigeria and Benin could also work in Bafana’s favor if they win by at least two goals.
Despite the setback, Foster insists the team’s spirit remains unbroken.
“Obviously it wasn’t the result we wanted. We believed we would get a different result, but it wasn’t to be,” he said. “The mood in the camp is still good and we know it is far from over. We play on Tuesday, and if we get the result there, and other things work for us, we’ll qualify.”
The forward, speaking with Supersport, emphasized the importance of staying positive and focused.
“It’s just about focusing on the next one. The past is the past — it’s time to move forward.”
As the decisive clash against Rwanda approaches, Foster also issued a rallying call to South African fans:
“There’s no reason to feel despondent. There’s still so much to play for. The support we’ve had has been great, and we just ask for the same in Mbombela. This is the most important game, so we ask supporters to come out in numbers.”
With determination, team spirit, and a little luck from other results, South Africa could yet secure their dream of returning to the world’s biggest football stage.
