Andreas Hountondji Eyes Rwanda Clash As Benin Chase 2026 World Cup Dream
Benin forward Andreas Hountondji has declared that the upcoming clash against Rwanda will be a defining moment in their bid to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
With just two rounds of matches left, the Group C qualifiers are wide open. Benin currently sit at the top of the table with 14 points, narrowly ahead of South Africa on goal difference, while Nigeria and Rwanda trail closely behind with 11 points each.
Hountondji’s Rallying Call
Speaking to FIFA.com, Hountondji expressed both excitement and determination ahead of the crunch tie.
“I honestly can’t wait. To be honest, I don’t know if it’s fully dawned on me yet how close we are to actually qualifying. Playing for the national team is a really special adventure and one that’s so rewarding on a human level. This is our country, so it means so much to us.”
The striker acknowledged that the game against Rwanda could define the campaign:
“Our next match, against Rwanda, is going to be pivotal. If we manage to pick up the three points, we’ll be very handily placed ahead of our final game, against Nigeria. Honestly, I have so much love for this group of boys that just finding ourselves in this position now, as the qualifiers are coming to an end, is amazing.”
A Chance To Make History
Benin’s rise in the qualifiers has been one of the standout stories of African football this year. Led by a determined squad, the Cheetahs have shown grit and consistency to outpace continental heavyweights.
Hountondji believes the squad has the hunger and unity to finish the job:
“I’m really looking forward to seeing just how pumped and hungry we’ll be. We’ve got the chance to create great excitement and some incredible memories. I think we’re capable of getting the job done – anything is possible.”
