Nigeria Premier League
Remo Stars’ Mbaoma To Miss Midweek Fixtures
The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) new season kick started on Friday, 22nd August 2025 with the opening fixture of the defending champion, Remo Stars welcoming the last season runners up Rivers United in MKO Abia Sports Complex Abeokuta, Ogun State capital.
Over the weekend, Victor Mbaoma and Albert Hilary were both taken off early in their respective games for Remo Stars and Plateau United.
The league opening match ended 1-1 after both teams struck early in the first half. Rivers United drew first blood in the 3rd minute through Aniekeme Okon, who etched his name in history as the first goalscorer of the new NPFL season.
Remo Stars responded quickly in the 9th minute, with returning striker Victor Mbaoma finishing brilliantly to restore parity.
However, Mbaoma’s joy was cut short after he picked up an injury and was replaced by Adama Goita midway in the first half.
Speaking after the game, coach Ogunmodede expressed disappointment;
On Mbaoma’s return, Ogunmodede could not hide his delight, describing the forward as a huge boost for his squad.
“I am extremely happy. In terms of history, he is the best striker the club has ever had, maybe the best overall. I’m happy he is back at a time when we need more quality in the squad, and he showed class today.”
He, however, expressed concern over the striker’s injury.
“For now, we’ll wait for the medical team’s evaluation. I hope it’s not too serious, but it looked bad.”
We can confirm that Albert Hilary was substituted because he wasn’t feeling well, but he is now back in training ahead of this weekend’s fixture.
On the other hand, the nature and severity of Mbaoma’s injury remain unclear. Some tests have been carried out by the club’s medical staff, and they are awaiting the results. However, it is very unlikely that he will be available for their weekend fixture.
