Chelsea Honour Diogo Jota With Club World Cup Bonus Donation
Chelsea are set to donate a share of the club’s £11.4million winners bonus earned from their victory at the FIFA Club World Cup to the family of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva who recently passed away in a car accident.
Reports state that the English Premier League side are set to offer up £400,000 – one player’s share of the total bonus fund. No matter which way you look at it, the classy move acts as a reminder that some things transcend on-pitch rivalry – and has earned the club praise from up and down the league.
Chelsea were reportedly ‘hit hard’ by the deaths of Jota and Silva – particularly Portugal international Pedro Neto who played alongside Jota on both the international stage and for former club Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Neto was given the option as to whether he wanted to continue playing at the tournament, where he chose to help the team to victory while dedicating his participation to Jota.
A further group of other players used their goal celebrations to pay tribute to the Portuguese forward, including Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele.
Enzo Maresca’s side defeated European Champions Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup final. The 3-0 victory in New Jersey earned the team an estimated £84.4million in prize money overall.
Liverpool announced last month that they were permanently retiring the number 20 shirt at all levels of the club in memory of Jota.
The Premier League has also announced that each club will pay tribute to Jota and Andre Silva on the opening weekend of the season. A moment of silence will be held at all games, while players will wear black armbands and tributes will also be shown on screens at grounds.
