Patrick Dorgu shines on Champions League debut as Manchester United beat Sabah 4-0

Patrick Dorgu enjoyed a memorable UEFA Champions League debut as Manchester United cruised to a 4-0 victory over Azerbaijani side Sabah at Old Trafford.

The Danish defender stepped in for Luke Shaw at left-back and made the most of his opportunity, providing an assist and helping United keep their first clean sheet of the 2026-27 season.

Dorgu played a key role in the opening goal, delivering a precise cross for Matheus Cunha to finish at the near post.

Bruno Fernandes, Benjamin Sesko and Lisandro Martinez also found the net as United secured a comfortable victory.

Dorgu makes immediate impact on Champions League debut

With Shaw rested for the game, Dorgu was handed the responsibility of starting at left-back.

The 20-year-old responded with a confident performance, contributing at both ends of the pitch.

His biggest attacking contribution came when he picked out Cunha with a dangerous near-post cross, allowing the Brazilian forward to open the scoring.

United went on to take control of the match, adding three more goals to complete a convincing win.

For Dorgu, however, the night was about more than simply making his Champions League debut.

Dorgu praises Old Trafford atmosphere

After the final whistle, Dorgu described his first Champions League appearance as an unforgettable experience.

Speaking to MUTV, the Danish full-back praised the Old Trafford crowd and expressed his happiness with both his own performance and the team’s result.

“It’s my first Champions League appearance, so it’s an incredible feeling. The atmosphere was amazing.”

Dorgu also said he was grateful for the opportunity to compete in Europe’s biggest club competition.

“I’m just thankful to have the opportunity to play in this competition, I’m really happy with my performance and the team’s performance as well.”

Manchester United finally keep a clean sheet

Dorgu’s contribution was not limited to the attacking end of the pitch.

United’s 4-0 victory also delivered their first clean sheet of the 2026-27 campaign, providing a welcome boost for the team’s defence after conceding in their recent domestic matches.

Dorgu admitted that shutting out Sabah was particularly important for the defensive unit and goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

“It was really important to get the three points, and the clean sheet as well, because we’ve conceded a lot of goals lately.”

He added:

“It gives all the defence and Senne in goal the confidence.”

The performance gives Dorgu another positive step in his development at Manchester United and could increase competition for the left-back position as the season progresses.
