Lionel Messi’s move to Major League Soccer has only strengthened his status as one of the world’s most marketable athletes, but Hollywood stars have discovered that working alongside the Argentine icon comes with one very strict condition.
According to actor Will Ferrell, production crews have just 30 minutes to film Messi once he arrives on set, forcing directors, actors and technical staff into a frantic race against the clock.
Speaking on The Dan Patrick Show, Ferrell shared an amusing behind-the-scenes story about Messi’s commercial work after hearing it directly from fellow actor Steve Carell.
Although Ferrell has yet to meet the Inter Miami superstar personally, Carell worked alongside Messi during an international advertising campaign for Lay’s potato chips, giving him first-hand insight into the football legend’s tightly managed schedule.
The actor explained that Messi’s off-field commitments are planned with remarkable precision, leaving virtually no room for delays or repeated takes.
Ferrell revealed that Messi’s production window is fixed from the moment he steps onto the set.
Once the Argentine arrives, everyone involved must be fully prepared because the clock immediately starts ticking.
“I talked to Steve Carell, who has met Messi,” Ferrell said. “I was in the domestic campaign for Lay’s potato chips; Steve was in the foreign campaign. Apparently Messi was in, and Messi has a rule: when he hits the set, you got 30 minutes with Messi, and that’s it.
“So there was a frenzy of activity to hurry up and get all the shots with Messi; otherwise, he’s out. He’s vamos.”
The revelation highlights just how valuable every minute of Messi’s time has become, even away from the football pitch.
Since joining Inter Miami, Messi has become an even bigger commercial attraction for brands looking to tap into his global appeal.
With football commitments, travel, recovery sessions and family life all carefully balanced, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner appears to keep his advertising obligations on an equally disciplined schedule.
That leaves production teams with little margin for error, requiring every camera angle, lighting setup and script rehearsal to be completed before Messi even arrives.
Once he walks onto the set, filming begins immediately—and 30 minutes later, it’s over.
Messi remains one of the most recognisable athletes on the planet, making him the face of numerous international campaigns across sport, fashion, food and technology.
His disciplined approach to commercial work ensures he can continue fulfilling those commitments without compromising his football career, while brands are more than willing to adapt for the opportunity to feature one of the greatest players in sporting history.
For Hollywood stars such as Steve Carell, working alongside Messi may be a memorable experience—but it’s also one that comes with a stopwatch.
