France captain Kylian Mbappe has penned a heartfelt open letter to supporters following Les Bleus’ disappointing finish at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, thanking fans for their unwavering backing while admitting the squad fell short of delivering the ending the nation deserved.
The Real Madrid superstar reflected on the emotional aftermath of France’s campaign, which concluded with a fourth-place finish after defeats to Spain in the semi-finals and England in the third-place play-off.
A week after France’s World Cup campaign came to an end, Mbappe chose to address supporters directly through an open letter published in regional French newspapers.
Accompanied by personal photographs—including a childhood image of himself standing in front of a poster of his idol, Thierry Henry—the letter offered an emotional insight into the disappointment still felt by the France captain.
“We didn’t bring home a team trophy. It hurts, and it will continue to hurt for a while. I’m not going to lie to you about that.”
Despite another outstanding individual tournament, Mbappe made it clear that the team’s failure to lift the trophy outweighed any personal achievements.
Much of Mbappe’s message focused on thanking supporters who followed France throughout the tournament despite the significant time difference in North America.
The 27-year-old acknowledged the sacrifices made by fans across France and around the world, praising their unwavering belief in the team even during its most difficult moments.
“You stayed up late, sometimes until the dead of night depending on the time zone, to watch us play on the other side of the world. You gathered at home, in bars, with family or friends, all over France and beyond.
“Others were right there with us, in the stadiums, flags draped over their shoulders. Children with shining eyes, men and women of all backgrounds and generations, united by the same joy: the joy of sharing.
“That’s the power of this sport. And you never gave up on us, even in the toughest moments, even when we least deserved it.
“This story was written by millions of hands, not just eleven on the field, all driven by the same passion.”
Mbappe added that the connection between players and supporters remains the driving force behind international football.
“Above all, it’s passion, the same passion that drives us on the pitch and drives you, in front of the screen and in the stands. That’s what we experienced together—an incredible story.”
Mbappe finished the tournament as the World Cup’s leading scorer with an impressive 10 goals, but insisted the individual accolade offered little consolation after France’s failure to reclaim the title.
The captain admitted the squad had hoped to reward supporters with another unforgettable triumph.
“I take the title of top scorer with pride, but it would have been so much better with the cup as well.
“Perhaps we owed you a better ending. But we don’t always choose the ending of the story—we choose what we put into it, and we put everything into it. We are proud of that.”
Mbappe also made sure to acknowledge the teammates whose contributions helped him enjoy another prolific tournament.
Rather than viewing the Golden Boot as an individual honour, he described it as a reward shared by the entire squad.
“Thank you to my teammates. Without their work, their runs, their passes, without this team spirit that carried us from the first to the last match, I could never have scored so many goals.
“This title belongs as much to the team as it does to me.”
Reflecting on his remarkable international journey, Mbappe concluded by expressing gratitude for fulfilling childhood dreams.
“As a child, I dreamed of playing in a World Cup, at least one. I played in three, I won one, and this year, I had the honour of playing in it as captain. I will never forget it.”
With another World Cup behind him and the disappointment still fresh, Mbappe’s message made one thing clear: while France fell short in 2026, their captain remains determined to lead Les Bleus back to the summit of world football.
