Mason Greenwood joins Fenerbahce in €39m deal as Man Utd secure major sell-on windfall

Mason Greenwood has completed a permanent move from Marseille to Fenerbahce, with the Turkish giants confirming the signing of the English forward in a deal worth €39 million.

The transfer not only ends Greenwood’s successful spell in Ligue 1 but also delivers a significant financial boost to Manchester United through a lucrative sell-on clause.

Fenerbahce complete marquee signing

Fenerbahce officially announced Greenwood’s arrival after reaching an agreement with Marseille and the player.

The 24-year-old has signed a four-year contract, becoming one of the club’s headline additions as they aim to challenge for both the Turkish Super Lig title and European success.

Greenwood joins after an impressive season in France, where he re-established himself as one of Ligue 1’s most productive attacking players.

€39 million fee to be paid in instalments

The Turkish club also disclosed the structure of the agreement.

Fenerbahce confirmed the €39 million transfer fee will be paid to Marseille in three equal instalments over the next three years.

In an official statement, the club said:

“The total transfer fee of €39,000,000 will be paid to Olympique de Marseille in three equal instalments over three years. In addition, the solidarity contribution fee that will arise in accordance with FIFA regulations will be paid by our club.”

Manchester United benefit from sell-on clause

Although Greenwood left Old Trafford before moving to France, Manchester United are set to profit from the transfer.

When Marseille signed the academy graduate, United reportedly negotiated a sell-on clause believed to be worth between 40% and 50% of any future profit or transfer value, depending on the terms of the agreement.

As a result, the Premier League club could receive close to €20 million from Greenwood’s move to Turkey.

The additional income provides United with valuable financial flexibility as they continue to manage Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

New challenge in Turkey

For Greenwood, the move represents another fresh start after reviving his career in Ligue 1.

He now joins a Fenerbahce side aiming to compete for major honours domestically while making a strong impression in European competition.

Meanwhile, Marseille cash in on one of their most valuable assets, and Manchester United benefit from a transfer they are no longer directly involved in, securing a sizeable windfall through the clause negotiated at the time of Greenwood’s departure.
