Cole Palmer told what he must do to emulate Chelsea legends Gianfranco Zola and Eden Hazard

Cole Palmer has already drawn comparisons with Chelsea greats Gianfranco Zola and Eden Hazard, but former Blues striker Tony Cascarino believes the England star is still missing one crucial ingredient to reach the same legendary status.

After a sensational first season at Stamford Bridge, Palmer’s form dipped during the 2025-26 campaign, prompting questions about how he can rediscover his best football.

Injuries disrupted Palmer’s progress

Palmer’s second campaign at Chelsea was hampered by injuries, with groin and toe problems forcing him to miss 26 matches across all competitions.

The attacking midfielder finished the season with 11 goals and three assists, a significant decline from the 25 goals he produced after arriving from Manchester City in a £40 million move in 2023.

Although Chelsea lifted the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup, Palmer’s reduced output saw him miss out on Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the 2026 World Cup.

Cascarino highlights what Palmer is missing

Speaking to GOAL on behalf of Tonybet, Cascarino admitted Palmer has the talent to become a Chelsea icon but believes the playmaker lacks experienced figures around him.

“There’s been a drop-off from Cole Palmer, that’s why he’s not been in the England squad.

“There’s obvious reasons why. He’s just not played to the level he showed when he first joined Chelsea.”

Cascarino pointed to the importance of experienced leadership in helping young stars develop consistently.

Chelsea need experienced leaders

The former Chelsea striker used Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard as an example of how experienced players can accelerate a young star’s growth.

“One of the shrewdest signings Liverpool ever made was Gary McAllister at 35 years old to play alongside Steven Gerrard.

“I don’t think that’s happened at Chelsea with Palmer.

“He was the young kid who burst onto the scene, but when he’s had a dip, he hasn’t had the experienced people around him.”

Alonso could unlock Palmer’s best form

Despite recent struggles, Palmer remains a central figure in Chelsea’s long-term plans, having signed a contract that runs until 2033.

With Xabi Alonso beginning a new era at Stamford Bridge, there is renewed optimism that the Spaniard can help Palmer rediscover the form that made him one of the Premier League’s brightest stars.

If Palmer can regain his confidence and consistency, comparisons with Chelsea legends such as Zola and Hazard may once again become justified.
