Harry Kane’s outstanding form has continued throughout the 2026 World Cup, with former England midfielder Danny Murphy identifying two key reasons why the Three Lions captain is producing arguably the finest football of his career.
The Bayern Munich striker has silenced long-standing criticism surrounding his performances at major tournaments by firing England into the World Cup quarter-finals.
Kane’s remarkable consistency shows no signs of slowing down.
After leaving Tottenham for Bayern Munich in 2023, the England captain has flourished in Germany, scoring an incredible 146 goals in 147 appearances while helping the Bundesliga giants lift two league titles.
Internationally, Kane has extended his status as England’s all-time leading scorer, netting 85 goals in 119 appearances. Six goals at the 2026 World Cup have powered England into the last eight, where they will face Norway.
With another major trophy within reach, Kane is also strengthening his case to be regarded as England’s greatest-ever men’s player.
Speaking to GOAL in association with BetWright, Murphy believes Kane’s excellent physical condition has been crucial to his outstanding displays.
“I think timing in football is key when you’re playing so much. You want to be peaking at the right times.
“In previous tournaments he’s looked like he was carrying something or looked heavy. This season he’s barely been injured.
“He’s played in a Bayern team that dominates so many matches, so he hasn’t needed the same physical output he had at Tottenham.”
Murphy believes Kane’s fitness levels have allowed every aspect of his game to flourish.
“He’s such a big guy and big forwards have to be at their best physically to look sharp.
“He’s always been an incredible finisher and technician, but because he’s so fit and hasn’t had injuries, he just looks outstanding physically.”
Murphy also pointed to Kane’s confidence after another prolific club campaign.
“Nobody has ever questioned Kane’s technical ability or finishing.
“This season has gone so well for him. He’s come into the tournament feeling great physically and probably as confident as he’s ever been because of the number of goals he’s scored.
“You can see it in his game. He looks completely comfortable.”
Murphy believes Kane’s performances have finally answered those who questioned his impact on the biggest stage.
“It’s great for him to have a tournament like this because of the criticism he’s had in the past.
“Now he’s getting the applause he deserves.
“Sometimes it’s simply about timing and a bit of luck—arriving at a tournament in great physical condition and full of confidence.”
With England preparing for a World Cup quarter-final against Norway, Kane’s red-hot form could prove decisive as the Three Lions continue their pursuit of global glory.
