Bruno Fernandes has spoken publicly for the first time since Portugal’s heartbreaking World Cup exit, admitting he feels “sad, frustrated and disillusioned” following the Selecao’s defeat to Spain.
The Manchester United captain also thanked his team-mates, coaching staff and supporters after Portugal’s hopes of lifting the trophy came to an end in the round of 16.
Portugal entered the tournament among the favourites but saw their title ambitions ended by a narrow 1-0 defeat to Spain.
Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner to send Spain into the quarter-finals and eliminate Roberto Martinez’s side from the competition.
The defeat also marked the end of Martinez’s tenure as Portugal head coach after the nation’s earlier-than-expected exit.
Fernandes took to X to express his disappointment while praising the squad that represented Portugal throughout the tournament.
“Sad, frustrated, and disillusioned.
“This group of players raised my expectations, not only because of their quality but also because of the incredible team we’ve built over these years.
“Thank you to all the players, coaching staff, and all the staff who accompanied and helped us every day during the World Cup.
“To all the Portuguese people, a huge thank you for your support and belief.”
Portugal began their World Cup campaign with a 1-1 draw against DR Congo before recording an emphatic 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan.
A goalless draw against Colombia secured qualification for the knockout rounds, where they overcame Croatia 2-1 to book a place in the last 16.
However, defensive lapses and missed opportunities ultimately proved costly against Spain, bringing Portugal’s World Cup journey to a disappointing end despite entering the tournament with genuine hopes of lifting the trophy.
