Mikel Arteta is targeting consecutive Premier League titles as Arsenal enter a new era after Pep Guardiola's departure from Manchester City.
Mikel Arteta has challenged Arsenal to make history by winning consecutive Premier League titles as the Gunners prepare for their first season without Pep Guardiola in the Manchester City dugout.
After finally ending Arsenal’s long wait for the Premier League title, Arteta now wants his team to prove they can stay at the top.
The Arsenal boss admits the challenge will be different without Guardiola, his former mentor and long-time rival, but insists the club’s ambition has not changed.
Arsenal are chasing something the club has never achieved in the Premier League era: back-to-back league titles.
Having ended their 22-year wait for the championship last season, Arteta believes defending the title is the next major challenge for his squad.
Speaking to talkSPORT, the Arsenal manager said:
“We have the opportunity to do something we haven’t done before at this football club, to win it back to back and that is the ambition.”
Arteta insists the target is not about personal glory.
“It’s not personal, it’s the collective ambition that we have and the ambition of the club. It’s a beautiful challenge.”
Winning consecutive Premier League titles would place Arteta among an exclusive group of managers who have achieved the feat, including Sir Alex Ferguson, Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola.
One of the biggest changes to the Premier League landscape is Guardiola’s departure from Manchester City.
For Arteta, the change is particularly significant.
The Spaniard worked alongside Guardiola at City before leaving to become Arsenal manager. Their relationship eventually developed into one of the Premier League’s most intense managerial rivalries.
Arteta admitted that competing against Guardiola for so many years had pushed Arsenal to improve.
“The amount of headaches and sweats he has provided to me over the last six or seven years to try to catch their level.”
He also paid tribute to his former mentor.
“He’s been an absolute inspiration, he’s left a mark on this league forever and he made all of us better.”
Now, with Guardiola gone, Arteta faces a different Premier League landscape.
But the pressure on Arsenal has arguably increased.
They are no longer the team trying to catch Manchester City.
They are now the team everyone else wants to catch.
Despite winning the league, Arteta does not appear ready to stop improving his squad.
Arsenal have already made a major statement in the transfer market with the reported £75 million signing of Bruno Guimaraes.
However, questions remain in the attacking areas following Leandro Trossard’s departure and uncertainty surrounding Gabriel Martinelli’s long-term future.
The Gunners have also been linked with attacking targets including Liverpool-linked winger Bradley Barcola.
Arteta refused to rule out further additions.
“If we can identify the talent to make us better then we have to do it.”
However, the Arsenal boss also stressed that recruitment is only part of the equation.
“We have to focus on what we have in house to make sure they evolve, grow and be better.”
Perhaps the biggest challenge facing Arteta is not simply winning another title.
It is proving that Arsenal’s success was not a one-season achievement.
Winning the Premier League once can be considered a breakthrough.
Winning it again requires consistency.
Arsenal now have to deal with the pressure that comes with being champions, while their rivals will be desperate to knock them off the top.
Arteta knows exactly how unpredictable the Premier League can be.
“You can see how crazy and unpredictable the league is.”
That is why he believes Arsenal must remain focused rather than getting carried away by their position.
The departure of Guardiola removes one of the biggest obstacles Arsenal have faced during Arteta’s reign.
But it does not make the Premier League any easier.
Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea and other challengers will all be looking to close the gap, while Manchester City will attempt to rebuild without their legendary manager.
For Arsenal, however, the objective is straightforward.
Defend the title.
Arteta has already spent years building Arsenal into a serious Premier League force.
Now comes the harder part: keeping them there.
Arsenal have gone from chasing Manchester City to becoming the team with a target on their back.
Arteta’s next challenge is therefore bigger than winning another trophy. He must show that Arsenal have built a sustainable winning culture.
If the Gunners can win consecutive Premier League titles, it would represent another major milestone in Arteta’s transformation of the club.
And with Guardiola no longer standing in his way, the rivalry may be over — but Arteta’s biggest challenge could only just be beginning.
