Inside Erica Parkinson’s elite mentality as Lionesses teenager targets NWSL and World Cup success

Inside Erica Parkinson’s elite mentality: How Lionesses wonderkid is preparing for NWSL success and a Women’s World Cup dream

Erica Parkinson was only 12 years old when she declared her biggest ambition: to represent England at a Women’s World Cup.

Six years later, that dream feels closer than ever.

Having become Sarina Wiegman’s youngest-ever England call-up and completed a move to NWSL side North Carolina Courage, the highly rated midfielder is rapidly emerging as one of the brightest talents in the Lionesses’ future.

Behind that remarkable rise lies years of meticulous mental preparation.

A dream that started at 12

When Parkinson first met mindset coach Martin Fairn of Gazing Performance, she already knew exactly what she wanted to achieve.

“I want to play for England at the World Cup.”

That ambition has shaped everything that followed.

Born in Singapore to an English father and Japanese mother, Parkinson has developed almost entirely outside England’s domestic system, spending her formative years in Portugal before earning recognition from the Lionesses setup.

Her profile changed dramatically when Sarina Wiegman included the then-17-year-old in England’s senior squad, making her the youngest player selected during the Dutch coach’s tenure.

The All Blacks-inspired mentality

Parkinson’s mental development has been guided by Gazing Performance’s renowned Red2Blue methodology, made famous by New Zealand’s All Blacks rugby team before their 2011 Rugby World Cup triumph.

The principle focuses on transforming anxiety and pressure into calm, focused performance during high-pressure moments.

Speaking to GOAL, Fairn explained why Parkinson immediately stood out.

“When you meet someone like Erica, she’s different.”

Rather than simply discussing football, the sessions focused on teaching that mentality is a skill that can be trained just like passing, shooting or dribbling.

That idea resonated immediately with the young midfielder.

Preparing for every new challenge

As Parkinson progressed through academy football in Portugal, senior football with Valadares Gaia and England’s youth system, each promotion brought fresh expectations.

Rather than waiting to react, she prepared mentally before every major step.

“Each time she’s gone to different levels, she does work with me, and primarily with herself, just to ensure that she’s ready for the change in levels,” Fairn explained.

The preparation extends beyond football itself.

According to Fairn, being mentally equipped for media attention, changing environments and increased expectations is just as important as performing on the pitch.

New challenge in the NWSL

Parkinson’s move to North Carolina Courage represents the biggest challenge of her club career so far.

After winning the Best Young Player award in Portugal’s top division during the 2024-25 season, she now joins one of the strongest leagues in women’s football.

The NWSL’s physical intensity, demanding schedule and competitive depth should provide another opportunity for her carefully developed mentality to prove its value.

World Cup dream edging closer

With the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup now just a year away, Parkinson has already positioned herself firmly in England’s long-term plans.

Competition for places in Wiegman’s squad will remain fierce, but the teenager’s combination of technical quality, maturity and elite mentality has already accelerated her development faster than many expected.

If her career continues on its current trajectory, the goal she confidently outlined as a 12-year-old could soon become reality.
