Gabriel Magalhaes credits Arsenal system after crucial Casemiro assist inspires Brazil World Cup comeback
Gabriel Magalhaes has credited Arsenal’s tactical approach for helping him deliver one of the defining moments of Brazil’s dramatic World Cup round of 32 victory over Japan.
The defender revealed that the attacking responsibilities he has developed under Arsenal’s high defensive line gave him the confidence to surge forward and create Casemiro’s crucial equaliser before Gabriel Martinelli completed the comeback.
Gabriel’s assist changes the game
Brazil looked to be heading for a shock exit in Houston before Gabriel stepped up with a decisive contribution.
With the Selecao trailing, the Arsenal centre-back advanced into midfield before producing a perfectly weighted pass for Casemiro, who powered home the equaliser to swing momentum back in Brazil’s favour.
According to UOL, Gabriel believes the move was a direct result of the tactical education he receives at club level.
Arsenal’s style prepared him for the moment
Reflecting on his influential assist, Gabriel explained that Arsenal’s aggressive defensive structure regularly encourages him to play further up the pitch and contribute in attacking phases.
“It is something I work on at Arsenal,” Gabriel said.
The Brazilian defender added that Arsenal’s high line naturally places him in advanced positions, allowing him to recognise opportunities to support attacks and pick out teammates making forward runs.
That awareness proved decisive against Japan, with Gabriel spotting Casemiro’s movement before delivering the pass that reignited Brazil’s World Cup campaign.
Martinelli completes the comeback
After Casemiro restored parity, another Arsenal player produced the decisive moment.
Gabriel Martinelli scored the winning goal to complete Brazil’s turnaround and secure their place in the round of 16, capping an impressive display from the Premier League duo.
Gabriel admitted he was delighted to see his club teammate make the difference on football’s biggest stage and praised Martinelli’s contribution to Brazil’s hard-fought victory.
Brazil’s resilience ultimately proved too much for Japan, with the partnership forged at Arsenal playing a key role in keeping the Selecao’s World Cup dream alive.
