Neymar breaks down in tears after emotional Brazil comeback as World Cup dream finally becomes reality

Neymar was overcome with emotion after making his long-awaited return to international football during Brazil’s 3-0 World Cup victory over Scotland. The Santos forward was seen in tears at full-time as nearly three years of frustration, rehabilitation and uncertainty finally gave way to a triumphant comeback on football’s biggest stage.

Emotional scenes as Neymar returns for Brazil

For Neymar, Brazil’s victory in Miami was about far more than securing top spot in the group.

When Carlo Ancelotti introduced the 34-year-old from the bench in the second half, it marked the end of a remarkable 981-day absence from the national team dating back to October 2023.

The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star has endured one of the most difficult periods of his career since then, battling through a devastating ACL injury and multiple setbacks that at times placed his World Cup participation in serious doubt.

As the final whistle sounded, the magnitude of that journey became impossible to hide.

Neymar broke down in tears on the pitch as teammates gathered around him, while Brazilian legend Ronaldinho was among those offering congratulations during the emotional celebrations.

“I was crying in the dressing room, yes,” Neymar admitted afterwards.

“I thank God to be able to help my country. I am so happy.”

Signs of rust but flashes of brilliance

While the occasion was unforgettable, Neymar’s performance highlighted a player still working his way back to peak sharpness.

Operating in a false-nine role after replacing Matheus Cunha, the Brazilian struggled initially to find rhythm. He appeared short of match intensity at times and surrendered possession on several occasions as Scotland attempted to disrupt Brazil’s attacking flow.

However, as confidence grew, so too did the quality of his performance.

Neymar began finding pockets of space between the lines, tested Angus Gunn with a powerful effort from distance and delivered a dangerous set-piece that nearly created another goal for the Selecao.

The moments of magic may have been brief, but they served as a reminder of the quality that has made him Brazil’s all-time leading scorer.

A journey few believed possible

Neymar’s road back to the national team has been anything but straightforward.

After returning to Santos, questions surrounded whether he could ever rediscover the physical condition required to compete at elite international level. Injuries, limited playing time and concerns over his fitness led many to believe his Brazil career had effectively come to an end.

Ancelotti, however, never lost faith.

The Italian coach continued to back Neymar throughout his recovery and was rewarded with an emotional return that could yet become one of the stories of the tournament.

Knockout stages present new challenge

Despite the fairytale comeback, Neymar is unlikely to be handed a guaranteed starting role as Brazil enter the knockout rounds.

The Selecao possess one of the tournament’s most talented attacking units, with Vinicius Junior, Raphinha and Matheus Cunha all playing key roles in Ancelotti’s plans.

Instead, Neymar may be used as an experienced impact player capable of changing games when Brazil need inspiration most.

After everything he has overcome simply to reach this point, however, that reality is unlikely to concern him.

For Neymar, being back in a Brazil shirt at the World Cup was already a victory in itself.

And judging by the tears at full-time, it was a moment he feared he might never experience again.
