Cristiano Ronaldo backed to play until 50 as ex-Man Utd star hails his ‘air of invincibility’
Cristiano Ronaldo’s extraordinary longevity continues to astonish the football world, and former Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham believes the Portugal superstar could still be playing professionally well into his 50s.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner is currently preparing for another World Cup campaign with Portugal while continuing to score regularly for Al-Nassr, showing little sign that retirement is anywhere on the horizon.
Sheringham predicts another decade for Ronaldo
While most footballers struggle to maintain elite standards beyond their mid-30s, Ronaldo remains a central figure for both club and country at the age of 41.
Sheringham believes the Portuguese icon’s commitment to fitness and self-improvement has created a unique situation that could allow him to extend his career far beyond normal expectations.
Speaking to BOYLE Sports, Sheringham said: “Could Cristiano Ronaldo play into his 50s at this rate? It wouldn’t surprise me when you look at his body at 41.
“He’s still as fit as a fiddle. He’s had his own training team for the past 15 years to keep him in tip-top shape and as long as he still has the desire then he will keep going.”
The former England international acknowledged that maintaining motivation becomes increasingly difficult with age.
“It’s tough when you get to that age, getting out of bed every day to go and do your training,” he added.
The fitness obsession behind Ronaldo’s longevity
Ronaldo’s remarkable physical condition has become almost as famous as his achievements on the pitch.
His carefully managed lifestyle includes strict nutritional plans, extensive recovery routines, cryotherapy sessions and a relentless training schedule that has allowed him to remain one of football’s most productive forwards despite entering his fifth decade of life.
Those habits continue to separate him from his peers, with the Portugal captain still capable of performing at a level few players have ever reached at his age.
‘An air of invincibility’
Sheringham believes Ronaldo’s mentality remains one of his greatest strengths.
The former Manchester United striker pointed out that the veteran forward continues to enjoy the game and still possesses the hunger required to compete at the highest level.
“I’m sure he still loves what he’s doing and he’s playing in a league that’s obviously not as strong as other competitions around the world,” Sheringham said.
“But if you’re still scoring goals and people still want you to play, then why not keep going?
“He has an air of invincibility around him, and he’s got the body as well and the fitness, so I think we’ve got plenty of years of Ronaldo to come yet.”
No Real Madrid reunion expected
Despite continuing speculation whenever Jose Mourinho is linked with a major club, Sheringham dismissed any suggestion that Ronaldo could return to Europe for one final chapter.
With Mourinho now back at Real Madrid, some supporters have dreamed of a reunion between two of Portugal’s greatest football figures.
However, Sheringham believes that possibility is firmly off the table.
“Can I see Cristiano Ronaldo coming back to Real Madrid to play under Jose Mourinho again? Definitely not,” he said.
“He will not be coming back to Europe.”
One final World Cup mission
For now, Ronaldo’s focus remains on Portugal’s quest for World Cup glory.
Having already conquered European football and won virtually every major club honour available, the World Cup remains the final prize capable of further elevating his legendary status.
Whether he plays for another two years or another ten, Ronaldo continues to challenge every conventional expectation about age, longevity and elite performance in modern football.
And if Sheringham is correct, football fans may not be saying goodbye to the Portuguese superstar anytime soon.
