Bernardo Silva completes Real Madrid move as Jose Mourinho lands first major signing from Man City
Real Madrid have officially announced the signing of Bernardo Silva on a free transfer from Manchester City, handing Jose Mourinho his first marquee addition since returning to the Santiago Bernabeu.
The Portuguese playmaker arrives in Spain after bringing an extraordinary nine-year spell at the Etihad Stadium to an end, with Los Blancos beating off competition from several European rivals to secure one of the most high-profile free-agent deals of the summer.
Mourinho influence proves decisive
Mourinho’s return to Madrid is already having a significant impact on the club’s recruitment strategy.
According to reports, the veteran manager played a pivotal role in convincing his fellow Portuguese international to choose Real Madrid as the next destination in his career. After two seasons without major silverware, Madrid’s hierarchy were determined to inject proven quality and leadership into the squad, with Silva quickly emerging as a priority target.
Despite interest from Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, both clubs reportedly stepped back once Madrid intensified their pursuit. The Athletic claims neither side was prepared to improve their offers, allowing Florentino Perez and Mourinho to complete the deal without a prolonged transfer battle.
Real Madrid confirmed the move in a statement, saying: “Real Madrid C.F. and Bernardo Silva have reached an agreement for him to become a Real Madrid player for the next two seasons, until June 30, 2028.”
Curtain falls on legendary Manchester City career
Silva leaves Manchester City as one of the most decorated and influential players in the club’s history.
Signed from Monaco in 2017, the midfielder became a cornerstone of Pep Guardiola’s dynasty, making 460 appearances and winning 19 major trophies during his time in England. His versatility, work ethic and technical excellence made him one of the most trusted players in Guardiola’s system.
The 31-year-old also embraced greater responsibility during his final season, captaining the club following Kyle Walker’s departure. He appeared in all 38 Premier League matches as City finished runners-up, while helping the club secure both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
His departure marks the end of an era at the Etihad, with supporters bidding farewell to one of the defining figures of the club’s most successful period.
Real Madrid’s summer rebuild gathers momentum
Silva’s arrival is the latest statement of intent from a Madrid side determined to reclaim domestic and European supremacy.
The club has already strengthened its defence with the signing of Marc Cucurella from Chelsea, while further moves for Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate and Inter wing-back Denzel Dumfries are reportedly advancing.
Adding a player of Silva’s experience and winning mentality provides Mourinho with an immediate leader capable of influencing matches in multiple positions across midfield and attack.
For Madrid, it is another major step in what is rapidly becoming one of the most ambitious rebuilds in European football.
For Silva, it is the opportunity to begin a new chapter at one of the biggest clubs in the world under a manager who has made him a central figure in his plans.
