Harry Kane backed to smash 100-goal England milestone as Darren Anderton predicts Three Lions legend has ‘years left’

Former England international Darren Anderton believes Harry Kane can continue rewriting the record books and potentially become a member of international football’s exclusive 100-goal club.

The Bayern Munich striker already stands alone as England’s all-time leading scorer with 79 goals and remains one of the Three Lions’ most important players heading into the 2026 World Cup.

Kane’s remarkable England journey

Kane’s international story could hardly have started in more dramatic fashion. The striker scored just 80 seconds after coming off the bench on his England debut against Lithuania in 2015 and has never looked back.

Since then, the former Tottenham star has eclipsed Wayne Rooney’s long-standing England record of 53 goals and established himself as one of the most prolific international forwards of his generation.

His achievements include winning the World Cup Golden Boot in 2018 and reaching double figures for England in multiple calendar years, including a personal-best haul of 16 goals in 2021.

Anderton sees no reason Kane cannot reach 100

Speaking exclusively to GOAL in association with Casino Kings, former Tottenham and England winger Darren Anderton believes Kane still has plenty left to offer at both club and international level.

“He still has a few years left if he wants them,” Anderton said.

“The thing is, he’s never relied on being the fastest player in the world. I always said the same about Teddy Sheringham. He’s not slow, but pace has never been the biggest part of his game.

“As he loses a bit of speed, I don’t think it’ll affect him as much as it would other players. So who knows how far he can go?

“The concerning issue is that we haven’t really got anyone to replace him, so at the moment it looks like he can play for as long as he wants.”

With 79 goals already to his name, Kane appears well-positioned to challenge the 100-goal milestone reached by only a select group of international football icons, including Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

More than just a goalscorer

While Kane built his reputation as a ruthless finisher, his game has evolved significantly in recent years. The England captain now frequently drops into deeper positions to link play and create opportunities for teammates.

That transformation has drawn comparisons with former England striker Teddy Sheringham, who was renowned for combining goalscoring instincts with exceptional football intelligence.

Anderton believes Kane’s all-round qualities make him a dream teammate for wide players.

“There’s a bit of Teddy Sheringham and Alan Shearer in him. I think he can do it all,” he explained.

“When Teddy used to drop deep and link the play, the next ball might then come out wide to me, but he’d still get into the box. I think Harry does the same.

“As a wide player, there’s no way you could have any problem playing with Harry Kane. He’s just had an incredible season. He can literally do everything. He’s absolutely world-class.”

World Cup focus remains

Kane heads into the 2026 World Cup as England’s captain, talisman and record scorer, with hopes of finally leading the Three Lions to major international glory.

Despite reaching consecutive European Championship finals in recent years, England have fallen short on the biggest stage. Anderton believes a more attacking approach could help Kane maximise his goalscoring threat during the tournament.

For now, the Bayern star remains focused on adding to his remarkable international tally — and if Anderton is right, England’s scoring record could soon be set at a level that may take generations to surpass.
