Ballon d’Or was never a dream as Man City star backs Lamine Yamal for future glory

Manchester City midfielder Rodri has revealed that winning the Ballon d’Or was never a personal ambition growing up because he simply never believed it was possible.

The Spain international reflected on his historic triumph while also tipping teenage sensation Lamine Yamal to eventually become football’s best player and claim the sport’s most prestigious individual honour.

Rodri reflects on career-defining achievement

Rodri enjoyed one of the most successful years of his career during the 2023-24 season, helping Manchester City secure the Premier League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup before guiding Spain to European Championship glory.

Those achievements culminated in the midfielder lifting the 2024 Ballon d’Or, becoming the first midfielder since Luka Modric in 2018 to win the award.

Despite reaching the pinnacle of individual recognition in football, Rodri insists it was never something he actively dreamed about during his younger years.

Speaking to DAZN, he explained that the achievement felt beyond his reach for most of his life.

‘Life surprises you’

Reflecting on his victory, Rodri admitted the award came as a surprise even to him.

“I wouldn’t call it a dream,” he said.

“I just couldn’t believe I could win. Life surprises you.”

The Manchester City star was keen to emphasise that individual honours have never been his primary focus, viewing the award as a consequence of collective success and consistent performances rather than an objective in itself.

“Basically, I don’t give it more importance than it deserves, even though it is important.”

“It’s being named the best. This was a consequence of a job well done. I’m grateful to the people who voted for me and for the recognition.”

“It was very special for me and my family.”

Rodri predicts Ballon d’Or success for Yamal

While Rodri reflected on his own achievement, he also turned his attention toward one of football’s brightest young talents.

Barcelona and Spain star Lamine Yamal continues to attract worldwide attention following his extraordinary rise, and Rodri believes it is only a matter of time before the teenager claims the Ballon d’Or himself.

The midfielder described Yamal as both the present and future of Spanish football.

“Two Spanish players, one of the present and one of the future,” Rodri said.

“He’s already a star, but with the future he has ahead of him, it’s impressive.”

The City midfielder then delivered perhaps the strongest endorsement possible.

“One day he’ll win the Ballon d’Or, he’s a beast.”

More than just a football superstar

Rodri was equally eager to praise Yamal’s character away from the pitch.

While much of the public focus has centred on the teenager’s footballing ability, Rodri believes people often underestimate his maturity and personality.

“He’s a spectacular guy,” Rodri continued.

“I have a very good relationship with him. People don’t know him that well. I would encourage people to get to know him. He’s a fantastic guy.”

The midfielder also dismissed suggestions that the immense attention surrounding Yamal could become a burden.

Instead, he believes the Barcelona star possesses the mentality required to handle the pressure that comes with being one of the world’s most recognisable young players.

Mature beyond his years

Rodri highlighted Yamal’s maturity as one of the reasons he expects the youngster to continue thriving at the highest level.

“No, I think players of his calibre, who have that ability and are unique, have that kind of impact, for better or for worse. You have to live with it,” he explained.

“He’s incredibly mature.”

The Spain international concluded by praising the teenager’s attitude and values.

“He’s a fantastic kid. He has amazing values for his age. Very focused, very mature.”

“Let’s not forget he’s 18, just like we all were. I’m happy because he’s growing so much.”

With Rodri already having conquered football’s biggest individual prize and Yamal widely viewed as a future winner, Spain appear to have one Ballon d’Or holder passing the torch to the next generation.
