The Netherlands suffered an unexpected setback in their final preparations for the 2026 World Cup after falling to a 1-0 defeat against Algeria at De Kuip, with head coach Ronald Koeman delivering a scathing assessment of his side’s performance.

Despite dominating possession and creating several clear-cut opportunities, the Oranje failed to convert their chances before Algeria struck a late winner to stun the home crowd.

Koeman furious after missed opportunities

The Dutch manager was left visibly frustrated after watching his side squander a series of chances that should have put the game beyond reach.

The Netherlands controlled large spells of the contest and carved out numerous openings, but poor finishing ultimately proved costly as Algeria capitalised late on.

Speaking after the match, Koeman made no attempt to hide his disappointment.

“I absolutely hate losing. You have to win this when you get four or five big chances,” he told NOS.

“If you convert those, a match like this becomes much easier. It shouldn’t be a problem then, but in the second half we played worse football. We lacked aggression and it was too nice.”

Malen singled out after difficult evening

Much of the criticism centred on forward Donyell Malen, who endured a frustrating night in front of goal.

The attacker struck the woodwork and missed two further opportunities that could have given the Netherlands a comfortable lead before Algeria’s decisive goal.

Koeman specifically highlighted Malen’s finishing struggles when discussing the result.

“He definitely needs to score at least one goal. Normally he does,” the Dutch boss added.

Striker admits frustration

Malen was equally disappointed with his own display and acknowledged that he failed to take advantage of the opportunities that came his way.

“Of course, as a striker, you want to score,” he said after the game.

“We created enough chances, but today they just wouldn’t go in. That’s part of a striker’s life.”

Reflecting on his clearest opening, the forward admitted he failed to connect properly with the ball.

“I didn’t get out well and didn’t connect with the ball properly. I didn’t see the players next to me either, otherwise I would have laid it off.”

Focus shifts to final World Cup preparation

While the defeat raises concerns, the Netherlands still have one final opportunity to fine-tune their preparations before the tournament begins.

Koeman’s side will travel to New York for a final warm-up fixture against Uzbekistan before turning their full attention to the World Cup.

The Dutch remain among the contenders heading into the tournament, but Koeman will be demanding a significant improvement in both their finishing and intensity if they are to challenge for international football’s biggest prize.
