Former Liverpool, Manchester City and Brighton midfielder James Milner has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 40, bringing the curtain down on one of the most extraordinary careers in Premier League history.
Milner confirmed his decision after completing a record-breaking 24 seasons in England’s top flight. The veteran midfielder retires as the Premier League’s all-time appearance leader with 658 matches, surpassing the previous record held by Gareth Barry earlier this year.
Having represented Leeds United, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool and Brighton throughout his career, Milner leaves the game with an unmatched reputation for professionalism, consistency and longevity.
In a statement announcing his retirement, Milner reflected on a journey that began with his boyhood club Leeds.
“After 24 seasons in the Premier League, it feels like the right time to bring an end to my playing career.
From making my debut for Leeds United, who I supported growing up, at the age of 16 and becoming the Premier League’s youngest scorer, I could never have dreamed of the journey I’ve been on.”
Milner enjoyed success across multiple clubs, winning major honours with both Manchester City and Liverpool.
His trophy collection includes multiple Premier League titles, domestic cups, and the UEFA Champions League, while he also earned international recognition with England.
Looking back on his career, Milner emphasized that the relationships he built along the way mattered just as much as the silverware.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to experience some unforgettable moments, from fighting for survival to winning trophies, playing in Europe, and representing my country.
But more than anything, it is the people and friendships I’ve made throughout my time in the game I will cherish forever.”
Milner’s final years at Brighton were not without challenges.
A serious knee injury suffered against Arsenal threatened to end his playing career before he could break the Premier League appearance record. The midfielder endured months of rehabilitation and admitted there were moments when the milestone looked unlikely.
However, he fought his way back to first-team action and helped Brighton secure European qualification once again.
Reflecting on that period, Milner said:
“It was pretty unlikely at that time, to be honest, but I was fortunate to have good people around me. People who believed in me and a good group of players who I am playing with.”
While retirement ends his playing days, Milner’s future in football appears far from over.
The former England international has already completed his UEFA coaching qualifications and is widely expected to explore opportunities in management.
Milner revealed that former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has already offered advice on handling the transition away from the pitch.
“Jurgen told me when you finish the first thing you need to do is have a break.
I think when you’ve been at the intensity I’ve been at for as many years as I have, that’s important, to take stock and have a little break and work out what the next step is.”
Few players have matched Milner’s durability, versatility and professionalism across such a lengthy career.
From a teenage debutant at Leeds to a Premier League record-holder at Brighton, Milner’s journey spanned generations of English football and set a benchmark that may stand for many years to come.
As he steps away from the game, he leaves behind a legacy as one of the Premier League’s most respected and enduring figures.
