Cristiano Ronaldo At The 2030 World Cup? Portugal Chief Makes Reality Clear
Portugal President Addresses Ronaldo’s 2030 World Cup Chances
Cristiano Ronaldo may still be starring for Portugal national football team today, but federation president Pedro Proenca has admitted it would take a “huge surprise” for the legendary forward to feature at the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
The tournament will hold special significance for Portugal, who will co-host the competition alongside Spain and Morocco. However, Ronaldo would be 45 years old by the time the event begins, making another World Cup appearance an extraordinary achievement even by his remarkable standards.
‘A Huge Surprise’ Would Be Needed
Speaking at the Bola Branca Conference, Proenca acknowledged the reality of age and physical limitations despite Ronaldo’s incredible longevity.
The Portuguese football chief suggested that, from a physiological perspective, it would be extremely difficult for the Al-Nassr star to remain at World Cup level in four years’ time.
While he refused to completely rule out the possibility, Proenca stressed that future national team selections will always be based on merit and performance rather than reputation.
The final decision, he explained, will depend on factors such as form, fitness and the judgment of whoever is coaching Portugal at that time.
Ronaldo’s Bond With Portugal Will Never End
Even if his playing career concludes before 2030, Proenca made it clear that Ronaldo’s connection with Portuguese football is permanent.
The federation president believes Ronaldo’s influence extends far beyond goals, appearances and trophies.
According to Proenca, the identities of the Portuguese national team and Ronaldo have become inseparable after more than two decades of service.
That relationship means the five-time Ballon d’Or winner will always remain a central figure within Portuguese football.
Any Role He Wants Could Be Available
Perhaps the most striking part of Proenca’s comments concerned Ronaldo’s future after retirement.
The federation chief suggested that the former stars of Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus would effectively be able to choose whatever role he desires within the Portuguese game.
Whether that eventually involves coaching, administration, ambassadorial duties or another leadership position remains unclear.
Proenca praised Ronaldo not only as an elite athlete but also as a global brand capable of elevating Portuguese football’s international profile.
Preparing For Life After Ronaldo
Portugal’s football authorities are also planning for the inevitable day when the country’s all-time leading scorer steps away from international football.
Proenca emphasized that the federation is working to ensure a smooth transition rather than viewing Ronaldo’s retirement as a crisis.
The focus remains on building long-term sporting and commercial stability while continuing to develop the next generation of Portuguese talent.
Players such as Joao Neves, Goncalo Ramos and Rafael Leao are among those expected to help carry Portugal into the post-Ronaldo era.
The Verdict
A sixth World Cup appearance for Ronaldo in 2030 cannot be completely dismissed given his unique career trajectory, but Portugal’s federation chief has acknowledged that it would be an extraordinary outcome.
What appears far more certain is that Ronaldo’s influence on Portuguese football will continue long after his final match.
As Proenca made clear, whenever that day arrives, one of football’s greatest-ever players will still have a place at the heart of the Portuguese game.
