Arsenal’s long-awaited Premier League title celebrations drew huge crowds to north London on Sunday, but emergency services were forced into action after a series of safety incidents during the club’s trophy parade.
Thousands of supporters lined the streets to celebrate Arsenal’s first league title in 22 years as Mikel Arteta and his squad paraded the trophy through the capital. While the vast majority of fans enjoyed the occasion responsibly, authorities were required to respond to multiple incidents involving supporters putting themselves at risk.
The London Fire Brigade confirmed that approximately 75 people had to be rescued from dangerous positions throughout the day.
Many supporters climbed rooftops, trees, traffic lights, and other elevated structures in an attempt to get a better view of the open-top bus procession. The scale of the celebrations created significant challenges for emergency personnel tasked with keeping spectators safe.
Assistant Commissioner Pat Goulbourne praised the overall behaviour of supporters but warned that the actions of a minority created avoidable dangers.
The use of flares and other pyrotechnics also caused concern during the celebrations.
A stray flare reportedly ignited a small fire at a nearby hotel, prompting a response from firefighters. Fortunately, the blaze was quickly contained and caused only minor exterior damage to the building.
Emergency services also reported that smoke from pyrotechnics triggered fire alarms at several locations across the area, creating further disruption as celebrations continued into the evening.
Authorities urged fans to avoid using flares and similar devices, particularly near buildings, transport hubs, and other potentially hazardous locations.
The Metropolitan Police deployed more than 500 officers to manage the large crowds surrounding the Emirates Stadium and parade route.
By Sunday evening, police confirmed that 16 people had been arrested for a range of offences, including:
Despite the arrests, officials described the event as largely peaceful given the enormous number of supporters in attendance.
The parade marked the culmination of a memorable campaign for Arsenal, who finally ended a 22-year wait for Premier League glory.
Supporters flooded the streets to celebrate a title triumph that had eluded the club for more than two decades, creating a vibrant atmosphere across north London.
While emergency services were kept busy throughout the day, authorities acknowledged that most fans celebrated responsibly as Arsenal marked one of the most significant achievements in the club’s modern history.
