Scott McTominay Backed For Shock Manchester United Return Amid Joshua Zirkzee Uncertainty

Scott McTominay Linked With Stunning Old Trafford Return

Scott McTominay has been tipped for a sensational return to Manchester United after thriving in Italy with SSC Napoli.

Former Scotland international Robert Snodgrass believes the midfielder could become the perfect solution for United if the club decides to move on from Joshua Zirkzee this summer.

McTominay has completely reinvented himself in Serie A, transforming from a defensive midfielder into a dangerous attacking force capable of scoring consistently at the highest level.

McTominay Thriving In Italy

Since leaving Old Trafford, McTominay has enjoyed arguably the best football of his career in Naples.

The Scotland international played a major role in Napoli’s Serie A title-winning campaign and was even crowned the league’s MVP after a string of dominant performances.

Known previously for his energy and defensive work, the 29-year-old has added a completely new dimension to his game in Italy.

His attacking numbers have improved dramatically, with McTominay producing back-to-back personal best goal returns while operating further forward.

That transformation has reportedly caught the attention of several clubs — including his former side.

Joshua Zirkzee’s Future Creating Questions

Meanwhile, uncertainty continues to surround Zirkzee’s long-term future at Manchester United.

The Dutch forward has struggled to fully adapt to the demands of the Premier League since arriving from Bologna in 2024 for a reported £36.5 million fee.

Despite flashes of quality, nine goals in 75 appearances has left many questioning whether the striker can become the consistent attacking focal point United need.

With Michael Carrick expected to reshape the squad ahead of another title push, attacking reinforcements could become a priority this summer.

Snodgrass Believes McTominay Fits The Profile

Speaking about the possibility of McTominay returning to Old Trafford, Robert Snodgrass admitted the move could make perfect sense.

The former Scotland international believes McTominay now possesses the confidence, mentality and attacking maturity needed to thrive at Manchester United.

Snodgrass explained:

“Would it be a bad shout actually seeing Manchester United bring him back?”

He also pointed to the midfielder’s development in Italy, suggesting the experience away from England has elevated his game significantly.

According to Snodgrass, McTominay now carries himself like a player who fully believes he belongs among football’s elite.

Napoli Won’t Let Him Leave Cheaply

Any move, however, would likely require a massive financial offer.

McTominay remains one of Napoli’s most valuable players following his outstanding performances over the last two seasons.

Snodgrass believes a strong showing for Scotland national football team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup could push his value even higher.

He said:

“There will be a big transfer fee on him.”

Napoli are under no pressure to sell, meaning Manchester United would likely need to pay significantly more than the fee they originally received for him.

Has McTominay Finally Found His Best Position?

One of the biggest talking points surrounding McTominay’s evolution is his new tactical role.

While United often used him deeper in midfield, Napoli have unleashed him closer to goal — and the results have been dramatic.

Snodgrass believes the midfielder is now most effective as an advanced No.8 or No.10.

He praised McTominay’s ability to:

  • Arrive late into the box
  • Attack crosses aggressively
  • Make intelligent forward runs
  • Contribute goals consistently

That attacking instinct has become one of the defining features of his game in Italy.

A Fairytale Return Could Be On The Cards

Football has a habit of creating unexpected full-circle moments — and McTominay returning to Manchester United could become one of the stories of the summer.

After years of criticism at Old Trafford, the academy graduate has rebuilt his reputation abroad and emerged as one of Europe’s most improved midfielders.

Now, with United searching for leadership, mentality and goals, the player they once allowed to leave could suddenly look like exactly what they need.
