Haji Wright Facing Uncertain Future As Premier League Questions Emerge Over Coventry Star
American striker Haji Wright may have fired Coventry City back into the Premier League, but questions are already being asked about whether the USMNT star can truly shine at the highest level of English football.
The 28-year-old enjoyed another productive campaign for the Sky Blues, scoring 17 Championship goals as Frank Lampard’s side sealed promotion and sparked unforgettable celebrations at the CBS Arena. Wright’s pace, movement, and finishing ability made him one of Coventry’s biggest attacking weapons throughout the season.
However, former Coventry striker Clinton Morrison believes the Premier League could present a completely different challenge for the American forward.
Speaking exclusively to GOAL via Freebets.com, Morrison admitted that while Wright has quality, he is unsure whether the striker can consistently deliver the numbers needed to keep a newly promoted side competitive in the Premier League.
According to Morrison, Wright causes defenders problems and remains a dangerous attacking player, but the lack of space and reduced number of chances in the top flight could expose weaknesses in his game. The former striker suggested Coventry may still need to sign a more clinical and experienced Premier League-level forward this summer.
Despite the concerns, Wright’s overall numbers in England remain impressive. Since joining Coventry in 2023 as the club’s record signing, he has scored 49 goals in 124 appearances, becoming a fan favourite and a key figure in the club’s rise back to the top flight after a 25-year absence.
Transfer speculation is also beginning to heat up around the USMNT international. West Ham were previously linked with the Los Angeles-born forward, and Morrison believes Coventry could consider selling if a “big bid” arrives during the summer transfer window.
Still, Coventry are not expected to let Wright leave easily. With the club preparing for one of the biggest Premier League seasons in their modern history, Lampard could decide to keep the striker as an important squad option while strengthening the attack around him.
For Wright, the stakes could not be higher. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaching on home soil for the United States, every performance next season could influence his chances of becoming a major figure for the USMNT on football’s biggest stage.
One thing is certain — whether he stays at Coventry or lands a blockbuster transfer, Haji Wright’s future will be one of the most fascinating stories to watch this summer.
