Arsenal have been dealt a significant blow ahead of their crucial Women’s Champions League knockout clash, with England star Beth Mead ruled out of the first leg against OH Leuven in Belgium.
The Lionesses forward was spotted wearing a protective boot after Sunday’s 1-0 win over Manchester City, and fears among supporters have now been confirmed.
Mead was substituted in the 68th minute against City without obvious signs of discomfort, but concerns grew when she appeared in a protective boot post-match.
Arsenal boss Renee Slegers has now confirmed the winger did not travel with the squad.
“Beth needs some time to offload her shin,” Slegers explained after the team landed in Belgium.
While the club has not indicated a long-term issue, the wording suggests a managed condition rather than a major injury — something Arsenal and England will both hope proves true.
The timing is far from ideal.
Arsenal are pushing to secure their place in the Champions League quarter-finals as reigning European champions. But beyond club commitments, England manager Sarina Wiegman will be monitoring the situation closely.
The Lionesses begin their 2027 Women’s World Cup qualifying campaign next month:
🇹🇷 Ukraine vs England (in Turkey)
🏴 England vs Iceland at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground (March 7)
With international duty approaching, careful load management could become a priority.
The Gunners may take comfort from their previous 3-0 victory over Leuven in December during the league phase. A strong first-leg result could allow Mead additional recovery time before the return fixture.
Mead is not the only notable absentee.
Stina Blackstenius remains sidelined with calf issues.
Anneke Borbe is still recovering from a head injury sustained in the FIFA Women’s Champions Cup final.
Taylor Hinds continues to deal with a foot problem.
There is at least one positive: first-choice goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar has returned to fitness after being out since early December.
With the season entering a decisive stretch — including an FA Cup tie against Bristol City and a Champions League knockout run — Arsenal will need depth, discipline, and careful squad management.
For now, all eyes are on Beth Mead’s recovery timeline.
Because for both Arsenal and England, her availability could prove decisive.
