Victor Osimhen Reveals Odion Ighalo And Obafemi Martins Inspired His Super Eagles Career As He Nears Yekini’s Record

Super Eagles talisman Victor Osimhen has opened up on the Nigerian football legends who shaped his international journey, revealing Odion Ighalo and Obafemi Martins as his biggest inspirations as he edges closer to breaking one of Nigeria’s most iconic records.

The Galatasaray striker is currently just two goals away from equalling the late Rashidi Yekini’s long-standing record of 37 goals for the Nigerian national team — a milestone that has stood as the ultimate benchmark for Super Eagles strikers for decades.

What Osimhen Said

Speaking in an interview with CBS Sports Golazo, Osimhen admitted he never had the opportunity to watch Rashidi Yekini play, but emphasized that the legendary striker’s impact remains timeless.

“Although I didn’t watch Rashidi Yekini, of blessed memory, play, he’s done something that has inspired a lot of people, which inspires me,” Osimhen said.

While Yekini’s legacy looms large, Osimhen explained that his most personal inspirations came from strikers he followed more closely during his formative years.

“Also, like Odion Ighalo, whom I draw a lot of inspiration from, as well as Obafemi Martins.
So for me, it would be up there on the verge of trying to break Yekini’s record,” he added.

A Record Within Reach

Osimhen did not hide what the achievement would mean to him, describing the prospect of surpassing Yekini’s tally as a defining moment in his career.

“It’s something I will never forget in my life. It’s something I will hold in higher esteem; it’s an honour for me,” he said.

Since making his Super Eagles debut, Osimhen has evolved into Nigeria’s most reliable attacking force, scoring 35 goals for the national team and carrying the hopes of millions whenever he steps onto the pitch.

From Inspiration To Legacy

Inspired by Ighalo’s perseverance and Martins’ explosive style, Osimhen is now on the brink of writing his own chapter in Nigerian football history. Whether he equals or breaks Yekini’s record, one thing is clear — Victor Osimhen is no longer chasing greatness, he is becoming it.

For Nigerian fans, the countdown has begun.
