Troost-Ekong Backs Super Eagles To Go All The Way As AFCON 2025 Dream Intensifies

Former Nigeria captain William Troost-Ekong has thrown his full weight behind the Super Eagles, calling on the team to seize the moment and bring the AFCON 2025 trophy home.

Eric Chelle’s men head into a blockbuster quarterfinal clash against Algeria with momentum firmly on their side, having won all four matches at the tournament so far. Their campaign has been highlighted by a ruthless 4–0 demolition of Mozambique in the Round of 16.

Standing in their way are the Riyad Mahrez-led Desert Warriors, a side that has been just as impressive, arriving at the quarterfinals with an unblemished record and the best defensive statistics in the competition.

A Bittersweet Tournament For A Former Captain

For Troost-Ekong, AFCON 2025 carries mixed emotions. The former Watford defender officially retired from international football in December, just weeks before the tournament kicked off in Morocco.

It marked the end of a distinguished decade-long career in Nigeria’s colours — one that saw him become a respected leader, defensive mainstay, and national team captain.

Although he is watching from the sidelines, Troost-Ekong admits his pride in the team has only grown as the tournament has progressed.

Troost-Ekong: “My Support Will Never Fade”

In an emotional statement released on Tuesday, the former captain reflected on his journey and reaffirmed his unwavering support for the Super Eagles.

“December was a deeply personal and emotional month for me, as I officially stepped away from international football after 10 unforgettable years representing Nigeria,” he wrote.

“To have worn the green and white for a decade, and to have captained my country, is something I will carry with pride for the rest of my life. Every cap, every anthem, every moment of struggle and celebration meant something far beyond football.”

Despite closing that chapter, Troost-Ekong made it clear his connection to the national team remains unbroken.

“However, as one chapter closes, my support for the Super Eagles will never fade,” he continued.

“Watching Nigeria complete a perfect group-stage campaign at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and then advance to the upcoming quarter-finals, playing with hunger, personality and belief, filled me with pride.

“The talent is there, the spirit is strong, and I have no doubt the team will continue to inspire millions back home.”

Eyes On Algeria, Dreams Of Glory

With Nigeria set to face Algeria in what promises to be one of the tournament’s defining matches, Troost-Ekong’s message resonates strongly — belief, unity, and purpose.

The Super Eagles are not just winning games; they are reigniting hope across the country. And as a former captain who knows what the badge truly means, Troost-Ekong’s words serve as both encouragement and challenge.

Now, the task is clear: finish the job and bring AFCON home.
