Roma Chief Speaks Out On Joshua Zirkzee Transfer Pursuit After Man Utd Sack Ruben Amorim

Roma sporting director Ricky Massara has revealed that Manchester United’s decision to sack Ruben Amorim has complicated the Italian club’s pursuit of Dutch striker Joshua Zirkzee. The Serie A side had been keen to secure the 24-year-old in the January transfer window, but the managerial change at Old Trafford has altered the landscape.

Massara Concedes Deal Is ‘Different’

The sudden departure of Amorim has sent shockwaves through the transfer market, leaving potential moves involving United players in limbo. Foremost among them is Zirkzee, who struggled to cement a regular starting spot under the Portuguese manager.

Speaking to Sky Sports Italy, Massara admitted that the situation has changed.

“He is a Manchester United centre-forward liked by many clubs, not just us. Naturally, the situation is different after this change of management. There are no contacts in progress, but I wouldn’t focus on individual names.”

Roma Desperate For Firepower

Roma had earmarked Zirkzee as a key solution to their goalscoring woes. His ability to link play, drop deep, and bring teammates into attacking moves had made him a standout in Serie A with Bologna. United reportedly value him at around £30 million ($47m), reflecting his talent despite a tough spell in England.

Massara acknowledged the club’s need to strengthen in the final third:

“We know this window is an opportunity to reinforce the squad in an area where we have struggled to convert chances into goals, so we will try to use it.”

However, the managerial shake-up at United means Roma may now have to explore alternative targets if the club decides to retain Zirkzee.

A Fresh Start At Old Trafford

For Zirkzee, Amorim’s departure could offer a fresh opportunity to revive his United career. Under Amorim, he found first-team minutes limited and was reportedly open to leaving for regular football.

With interim manager Darren Fletcher in charge, and United concerned about squad depth mid-season, Zirkzee’s potential exit is now on hold. The club wants to ensure whoever takes over permanently has the full complement of players available, a policy likely to extend to fringe players like Kobbie Mainoo as well.

For Zirkzee, the January window might now be less about leaving and more about proving himself to the new regime at Old Trafford.
