AFCON 2025
Calvin Bassey Hails Ademola Lookman After Nigeria’s Dominant AFCON Win Over Mozambique
Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has showered praise on Ademola Lookman following Nigeria’s emphatic 4–0 victory over Mozambique in the Round of 16 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Super Eagles delivered their most complete performance of the tournament on Monday night at the Complexe Sportif de Fes, booking their quarter-final ticket in style and reinforcing their status as genuine title contenders.
While Victor Osimhen grabbed the headlines with a well-taken brace and Akor Adams opened his international goal account, it was Ademola Lookman’s brilliance in the final third that truly defined the contest.
Lookman’s Creative Masterclass
The Atalanta forward opened the scoring with a calm and precise finish before turning provider, registering two assists to cap a sensational all-round display.
With four goals and three assists already at AFCON 2025, Lookman now boasts seven goal involvements in the tournament — a staggering return that places him firmly among the frontrunners for Player of the Tournament.
His influence stretched beyond numbers, as Nigeria’s attacks consistently flowed through his movement, vision, and intelligent decision-making in the final third.
Calvin Bassey Reacts
Speaking after the match, Fulham defender Calvin Bassey could not hide his admiration for his teammate’s performance, while also praising the collective effort of the squad.
“Yeah, Lookman was good, he was amazing. I think he played with so much quality,” Bassey said.
“You could have singled out any one of the boys. I’m proud of everyone who played today, and I feel like everyone was amazing, so it was a good day.”
Bassey’s comments reflected the unity within Eric Chelle’s squad, a factor that has been central to Nigeria’s flawless run so far in Morocco.
Man Of The Match And Bigger Targets Ahead
Lookman’s display earned him his second Man of the Match award of the tournament, further underlining his growing importance to the Super Eagles’ title charge.
Nigeria remain perfect at AFCON 2025, maintaining a 100 percent record as they head into the quarter-finals with confidence and momentum on their side.
Eric Chelle’s men will face the winner of the Round of 16 clash between Algeria and DR Congo on Sunday, January 10, in Marrakech, as they continue their quest for a fourth AFCON crown.
If Lookman maintains this level, Nigeria’s journey could yet end with continental glory.
