Super Eagles Boycott Training Over Unpaid Bonuses Ahead of Crucial World Cup Playoff
Tension has gripped the Super Eagles camp just hours before their crucial World Cup playoff against Gabon, following reports that players have boycotted training over unpaid bonuses.
The controversy erupted at a critical moment when Nigeria’s qualification hopes hang in the balance, sparking fresh outrage among fans and football stakeholders.
Players Stage Boycott in Morocco
According to reports from respected journalist Oluwashina Okeleji, the entire Super Eagles squad — including team officials — refused to train in Morocco due to unresolved payment issues.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Okeleji wrote:
“2026 World Cup playoff: Nigeria players & officials boycott training in bonus row. The full squad including officials boycott training today in Morocco because of unresolved issues with outstanding payments. Awaiting a quick resolution to continue preparation for Thursday’s game.”
The revelation quickly drew widespread criticism, with many Nigerians expressing disappointment over yet another administrative setback in national football.
Journalists and Fans Call Out the NFF
Adding his voice to the conversation, journalist Osasu Obayiuwana described the situation as another case of Nigeria’s recurring football mismanagement.
“Nigeria’s greatest adversary in football is Nigeria,” he wrote, urging the NFF to “pay them” and end the embarrassment.
Disrupted Preparations Ahead of Gabon Clash
With less than 48 hours before kickoff, the timing could not be worse. The Super Eagles are set to face Gabon in a high-stakes playoff in Rabat, with a ticket to the next stage of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers on the line.
As morale takes a hit and preparations stall, fans across Nigeria are hoping for a swift resolution to restore focus ahead of the decisive encounter.
