Mikel Arteta Reveals Why Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain Is Training With Arsenal After Besiktas Exit

When A Familiar Face Walks Back Into London Colney, It’s Bound To Raise Eyebrows — Especially When That Face Belongs To Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The former Arsenal and Liverpool midfielder, now 32, has been spotted training with the Gunners after his contract with Turkish side Besiktas was mutually terminated in August. But before rumors start flying, Mikel Arteta has made it clear — this reunion isn’t about sentiment, it’s about support and professionalism.

“Top. Top character. One of the best I’ve met in football,” Arteta told reporters. “If we can help him get up to speed and find a club, it’s a joy. The boys will learn from it.”

Old Teammates, New Roles

It’s a full-circle moment for Arteta and Oxlade-Chamberlain, who both joined Arsenal in 2011. Back then, one was a rising English talent, and the other a seasoned Spanish midfielder guiding the team through transition years. Fast forward to 2025, and their paths cross again — this time with Arteta as the teacher, and Oxlade-Chamberlain the role model.

The Gunners boss believes his former teammate brings more than experience to the pitch. He brings mentality — the kind young players in Arsenal’s academy can feed off.

“He’s a really good role model to have around the team,” Arteta added.

The Ox’s Journey: Trophies, Trials, and Turnarounds

Few players have had a career quite like Oxlade-Chamberlain’s. From 198 appearances and 20 goals for Arsenal to Premier League and Champions League triumphs with Liverpool, he’s seen it all.

After a stint in Turkey with Besiktas — where he won the Turkish Cup and played 50 matches — his career hit pause when the club decided to part ways. Now, back in England, the Ox is keeping fit and focused as he weighs up his next move.

Reports suggest interest from Leeds United, Birmingham City, and even a few Premier League sides sniffing around for experience and energy in midfield.

Sports Market Insight

In the modern football market, reputation and character often carry as much weight as stats. What Arteta is doing here is more than an act of kindness — it’s good football business. Helping a respected professional rebuild form while giving his young squad a mentor? That’s a win-win.

Whether Oxlade-Chamberlain lands another top-flight deal or takes on a new adventure abroad, one thing is certain: his story isn’t over yet.
