Inter & Netherlands defender on verge of shock move to Greek giants Panathinaikos

Former Inter defender Stefan de Vrij is closing in on a surprise move to Greek side Panathinaikos after ending his long association with the Serie A giants.

The experienced Netherlands international is available on a free transfer following eight successful years in Milan, with talks now at an advanced stage as Panathinaikos look to complete one of the most eye-catching deals of their summer rebuild.

Panathinaikos closing in on De Vrij

According to reports from the Netherlands, negotiations between Panathinaikos and De Vrij are progressing well, with only final details remaining before the transfer can be officially completed.

The 34-year-old centre-back is preparing for a new challenge after spending more than a decade in Italian football, where he established himself as one of Serie A’s most reliable defenders during spells with Lazio and Inter.

His arrival would represent a major coup for the Athens club, who are determined to strengthen after a disappointing domestic campaign that saw them finish fourth in the Greek Super League, 20 points behind champions AEK Athens.

Major changes underway in Athens

Panathinaikos have embarked on a significant restructuring project following last season’s struggles.

Former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez departed the club after failing to deliver a sustained title challenge, with Danish coach Jacob Neestrup appointed as his successor.

The highly-rated 38-year-old arrives after a successful spell with FC Copenhagen and has already identified defensive reinforcement as a priority.

De Vrij’s experience at the highest level of European football makes him an ideal candidate to anchor the new-look side as Panathinaikos aim to return to domestic and continental prominence.

Elite pedigree from Inter success

Few defenders available on the free-agent market can match De Vrij’s resume.

During his eight years at Inter, the Dutchman helped the Nerazzurri win three Serie A titles, three Coppa Italia trophies and three Supercoppa Italiana crowns while making himself a key figure in one of Italy’s most successful teams.

Before that, he enjoyed a successful spell at Lazio after emerging through the academy ranks at Feyenoord.

Across his time in Italy, De Vrij accumulated more than 300 Serie A appearances, establishing a reputation for composure, leadership and defensive intelligence.

Familiar faces await

Should the move be completed, De Vrij will join a squad containing several players with strong Dutch football connections.

Former Eredivisie stars Cyriel Dessers and Tonny Vilhena are already part of the Panathinaikos setup, which could help ease the defender’s transition to Greek football.

With European ambitions high in Athens, the club believe De Vrij’s winning mentality and vast experience can play a crucial role in helping them challenge for silverware once again.
