Zimbabwe Coach Michael Nees Warns Bafana Bafana: “We Won’t Do You Any Favours”
Warriors of Zimbabwe head coach Michael Nees has thrown down a stern warning ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Bafana Bafana, making it clear that his team will not roll over to help their South African neighbors qualify.
Zimbabwe Out, But Not Out Of Pride
Although Zimbabwe are already eliminated from contention, Nees insists his players are motivated to approach the clash with full seriousness. Speaking during his pre-match press conference on Thursday, the German tactician emphasized that Zimbabwe want to remain professional, competitive, and fair.
“Four teams can still qualify and it’s their responsibility,” Nees said. “Our prime motivation is to be proper footballers, sportsmen, fair competitors. We want to improve as a team and not be accused of anything improper. It’s our duty to be real competitors, which is what the spectators also want.”
Pressure On Bafana Bafana
For Bafana Bafana, the stakes could not be higher. Despite once cruising in Group C, they were handed a massive setback after FIFA docked them three points for fielding ineligible player Teboho Mokoena against Lesotho on matchday three. That sanction saw them slip to second place in the group.
Now, Hugo Broos’ men must win both of their remaining fixtures — against Zimbabwe today and Rwanda next week — to secure the sole qualification ticket.
Tight Group C Battle
Group C remains one of the most competitive in African qualifying. Alongside South Africa, Nigeria’s Super Eagles, current leaders Benin Republic, and Rwanda are all still in the hunt for a place at the 2026 World Cup.
With Zimbabwe vowing to play spoiler and Bafana Bafana under pressure to deliver, tonight’s showdown promises to be intense. The only question left: can South Africa rise to the occasion, or will the Warriors of Zimbabwe deny them a smooth passage?
