Reyna Signs Three-Year Deal For Mönchengladbach

Borussia Mönchengladbach have completed the signing of US international Gio Reyna from Borussia Dortmund on a three-year deal until 2028.

Reyna was just 16 years old when he joined Dortmund from New York City FC in summer 2019, but quickly settled into life in Germany with the club’s U19 side. He was soon promoted to the first team, making his senior debut shortly after his 17th birthday in a 5-3 Bundesliga win at Augsburg – the same game as Erling Haaland – on 18 January 2020.

The attacking midfielder, who has 32 caps for the USMNT, has since made 147 competitive appearances for BVB, scoring 19 goals.

“Gio is an experienced but also still young player with great potential,” said Gladbach managing director Roland Virkus. “We’ve been following him for a long time and are convinced he can help us further. He knows the Bundesliga, is versatile and capable of playing anywhere in attack.”

In a 3-2 win over Hoffenheim in August 2021, Reyna became the youngest-ever player at the time to reach 50 appearances in Germany’s top flight, breaking the record then held by Kai Havertz and marking the occasion with a goal.

However, the 22-year-old son of former Bayer Leverkusen, Wolfsburg, Rangers, Sunderland and Manchester City midfielder Claudio has found his playing time limited in recent seasons. After spending the second half of 2023/24 on loan in the English Premier League with Nottingham Forest, he made only 26 appearances – and just five starts – in all competitions for BVB last term.

“Borussia is a great, big club. I’m really happy this move has worked out and am really looking forward to getting to know the people here and obviously the tasks ahead,” said Reyna of his switch.

The USMNT international departs Signal Iduna Park with one major piece of silverware in the 2020/21 DFB Cup, which he won alongside the likes of Haaland, Jude Bellingham, Jadon Sancho and Marco Reus.

In terms of Americans in the Bundesliga, he ranks ninth all time for appearances with 106, ahead of Christian Pulisic and trailing long-time friend – and new colleague – Joe Scally. His 15 goals place him third behind only Thomas Dooley (20) and Fabian Johnson (18).

Gladbach kick off their Bundesliga season at home to newly promoted Hamburg on Sunday evening, while Dortmund begin their top-flight campaign at St. Pauli on Saturday.
