The Paris Saint-Germain defender and captain is on the list of nominees for the 2023 Samba Gold award, an annual trophy given to the male and female Brazilian player of the year.
The Samba Gold award is celebrating its 16th edition this year with a solid list of nominees and a slight change – having previously been reserved for players plying their trade in Europe, the award has now extended its scope to those playing in any country, including Brazil itself.
Created in 2008 by Samba Agency (now known as Sambafoot), the Samba Gold award had its first winner in the form of ex-midfielder Kaká. Last year, it was Neymar Jr. who took home the men’s prize for the sixth time, thereby becoming the player to have won it the most times in its history. On the women’s side of things, the 2022 winner was Debinha, while last year’s U20 award was taken home by Endrick, Palmeiras’s hot prospect who is set to join Real Madrid in 2024.
This year, the award boasts ten nominees in each category, with the Sambafoot team having analysed players’ stats, roles, sporting achievements and overall impact on their respective clubs in order to establish the award’s official list of nominees.
Voting will be open until 20th November 2023, with the public able to pick one nominee from each category as their favourite.
