Harry Maguire’s mother hits back at critics, says hatred beyond football

Harry Maguire’s mother has hit back on social media and defended her son after the centre-back received more criticism in the wake of his latest performance for England.

Maguire came off the bench at half-time as England won 3-1 against Scotland on Tuesday but the former Manchester United captain came under fire once again after scoring an unfortunate own-goal.

The 30-year-old has endured a tough spell in recent months but remained in Gareth Southgate’s England squad despite falling down the pecking order at Old Trafford.

The England boss came to his defence in the post-match press conference, with Maguire’s mother, Zoe, now also voicing her opinion in a social media post that criticised the abuse he has received.

“As a mum seeing the level of negative and abusive comments in which my son is receiving from some fans, pundits and the media is disgraceful and totally unacceptable to any walk of life never mind someone who works his socks off for club and country,” she said on Instagram.

“I was there in the stand as usual, it’s not acceptable what’s been created, over nothing. I understand that in the football world there are ups and downs, positives and negatives but what Harry receives has gone far beyond ‘football’. For me seeing him go through what he’s going through is not ok.

“I would hate to have to see any other parents or players go through this in the future, especially the young boys and girls breaking through the ranks today. Harry has a massive heart and it’s a good job he’s mentally strong and can handle it as others might not be able too. I wish this sort of abuse on nobody!”

Maguire started England’s first game of the international break – despite not starting a game for his club so far this season – as Southgate’s side drew 1-1 with Ukraine in Poland.

The defender has been a mainstay in Southgate’s England side throughout his tenure in charge of the national team and the England boss issued an impassioned defence of Maguire after the Scotland game, labelling the constant criticism of him “ridiculous” and “a joke”.

It Feels “Sweet” To Have First Career Trophy, Says Kane

It ‘feels sweet’ To Have First Career Trophy, Says Kane

Harry Kane said it feels “sweet” to have finally ended his career-long trophy drought as Bayern Munich lifted the Bundesliga title on Sunday.

The England captain, who joined the side from Tottenham in 2023, celebrated the long-awaited major title with his teammates after Bayer Leverkusen drew 2-2 at Freiburg at the weekend.

The 31-year-old has endured a series of heartbreaks for club and country but could finally celebrate achieving a major title this weekend.

He played a major role in their top-flight success this campaign, scoring 24 goals in 29 games and breaking the record in November for the fastest player to register 50 Bundesliga goals, needing just 43 games.

“What a night last night, what a celebration with the players, with the staff,” Kane – sporting a Bayern Munich shirt – said in a video posted to social media on Monday. “I’m sure everyone’s feeling it a little bit this morning! But we’re here and I feel amazing.

“It’s been a long time coming, obviously a lot of hard work, a lot of dedication. it just feels sweet to win the title, the first one of my career.”

Bayern had looked on track to secure the title against Leipzig on Friday but conceded a stoppage-time equaliser to draw 3-3 and delay the celebrations until Leverkusen’s draw.

Kane was forced to watch on from the stands following a one-game ban for picking up his fifth yellow of the season, but will be eligible to play when Bayern host Borussia M’gladbach this Saturday and can celebrate in front of their home fans.

“Appreciate all the support as always, it never goes unnoticed and I can’t wait to enjoy these next couple of weeks,” Kane continued. “I can’t wait to be at the Allianz [Stadium] on Saturday and celebrate in front of the fans.

“Then as always, we look forward to the next one, we go again and try to get number two.”

Kane’s first year with Bayern coincided with their first trophyless season in 11 years as Leverkusen ended their streak of 11 straight Bundesliga titles.

It led to quips that Kane’s 15-year career, which has seen him lose five major finals for both club and country, could extend indefinitely without winning a trophy, but despite disappointment in the Champions League this season the wait has finally ended.

Greenwood Announces Where To Move Next On Leaving Marseille

Greenwood Announces Where To Move Next On Leaving Marseille

Manchester United outcast, Mason Greenwood has reportedly made a decision on his Marseille future less than a year after joining the Ligue One outfit.

After spending the 2023/24 season on loan at Getafe in La Liga, Greenwood left United for Marseille in a permanent transfer which totalled £27 million.

Roberto De Zerbi’s men are second in the league behind Marseille and look good value to return to the Champions League next season.

Greenwood, who has switched international allegiance from England to Jamaica, has been in fine form in front of goal, finding the net 19 times in 33 appearances.

But according to a report from The Sun, Greenwood is looking to leave Marseille and is desperate to return to the Premier League.

As well as longing to play at the highest level once again, it’s said that Greenwood is missing his family and friends back in England and longs to be closer to them.

The 23-year-old’s last appearance in the Premier League came in January 2022 against West Ham and he was suspended by United after being arrested and subsequently charged with attempted rape, assault and coercive control back.

The charges were later dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service with key witnesses withdrawing their involvement in the case and new material emerging.

In 2023, United conducted a thorough club investigation which ultimately concluded with the mutually agreed decision that he should continue his playing career elsewhere.

Greenwood’s stint with Marseille hasn’t been all plain-sailing as De Zerbi dropped him last month for not working hard enough.

Marseille’s fans even got on his case with a banner which told him and teammate Luis Henrique to “get moving”, but Di Zerbi has been impressed by how he has responded.

“He is an introverted person, a little closed, but he has a wonderful family around him, an extraordinary father with whom I worked a lot, he helped me a lot to manage him , with the help also of Mehdi Benatia,” De Zerbi said.

“It is true that sometimes he gives us the impression that he can score three or four goals per game, and sometimes also that he wastes a little of his potential and his value.

“So how can we help him? Well sometimes by cuddling him, by taking care of him and sometimes also by being harder so that he continues his progression.

“This is the main objective that I have with all my players, beyond all those that we can have with the club, because if I make my players progress we can achieve the club’s objectives faster.”

United inserted a 50 per cent sell-on clause in Greenwood’s Marseille deal, which means they will be entitled to take half of a future fee.

Arsenal’s Interest In Signing Sane Persists

Arsenal Offered Surprise Chance To Sign 22-Year-Old Goal Machine

Arsenal are still interested in a summer move for Bayern Munich forward Leroy Sane, whose contract talks with the Bundesliga champions have stalled.

Bayern were close to reaching an agreement with Sane’s representatives over a new deal until 2028 last week, but the Germany international has recently informed the club that he has changed agents and is now represented by Pini Zahavi.

While that has not ruled out Sane signing a new contract with Bayern, it remains uncertain whether the German club will agree to revised terms, having previously been in advanced talks over an extension on reduced wages.

Sane has just two months left on his deal with the Bundesliga giants and is one of the club’s top earners, taking home £330,000 per week.

According to Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, Sane’s future is once again open amid interest from Arsenal, despite Bayern’s efforts to secure his contract renewal in recent weeks:

Sane, praised as ‘world-class’, has been a regular under Vincent Kompany this season, scoring 13 goals and providing five assists in 43 appearances across all competitions.

The Germany international has enjoyed a particularly impressive run of form lately, registering six goal contributions in his last seven Bundesliga matches.

Sane would bring considerable Premier League experience to the Emirates this summer, having spent four seasons at Manchester City and won two English titles.

He made 135 appearances during his time with the Cityzens before departing for Bayern in 2020, where he became a German champion for the fourth time last weekend.
