Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez’s strike helped Chelsea beat AFC Wimbledon 2-1 at Stamford Bridge in the EFL Cup second round on Wednesday night.
The Blues hosted AFC Wimbledon for the Carabao Cup second round match at Stamford Bridge in London. The two sides have only met in one friendly in 2014, in which Chelsea won 3-2.
The result has also been positive this time despite a poor start as the visitors seemed to have the upper hand in the first period. James Tilley scored the opener from the penalty spot following a foul by Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez on Harry Pell.
The English striker made no mistake and opened the scoring in the 19th minute to put his team into a dominant position. However, both teams went in at half-time level at 1-1 thanks to Noni Madueke‘s equaliser in stoppage time.
The Stamford Bridge outfit earned a spot-kick following a foul by Alexander Pearce on Madueke. The 21-year-old scored the equaliser from the penalty spot, just as the first goal of the match was netted.
Enzo Fernandez, who has played a prominent role for Chelsea since joining in January, has scored his first goal for the Blues after replacing Mason Burstow in the 65th minute. It took the Argentine just seven minutes to give the home side the lead.
The 22-year-old took advantage of a loose ball to try his luck from the edge of the box into an empty net. He sealed a 2-1 victory for the Stamford Bridge outfit to book their ticket to the next round of the Carabao Cup.
