Lens Beat PSG 1-0 to Win Trophee des Champions as LFP Faces Backlash

Lens players celebrate winning the Trophee des Champions against PSG at Stade Bollaert-Delelis

Lens Beat PSG to Win Trophee des Champions as LFP Faces Fierce Criticism Over Controversial Venue

Lens opened their season with a major trophy after defeating Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in the Trophee des Champions, but the victory has been overshadowed by criticism of the LFP’s decision to stage the match at Lens’ home ground.

Florian Thauvin scored the decisive goal as Lens held on to claim the trophy, despite spending a significant period of the match with a numerical disadvantage.

However, questions surrounding the organisation of the fixture have quickly become the biggest talking point.

Lens lift trophy on home soil

Lens defeated PSG 1-0 at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis, with Thauvin’s goal proving enough to secure the French Super Cup.

The victory represents a memorable start to the campaign for Lens, particularly against a PSG side that has dominated French football in recent seasons.

Yet the choice of venue has created controversy because the Trophee des Champions is traditionally intended to be played at a neutral location.

Instead, the LFP selected Lens’ own stadium.

That decision effectively gave the reigning club a home advantage in a match designed to showcase French football.

PSG fans heavily outnumbered

The biggest criticism has centred on the imbalance in the stands.

Reports indicated that approximately 95% of the stadium was occupied by Lens supporters, while PSG were allocated only around 1,850 tickets in the away section.

Rather than feeling like a neutral cup final, the atmosphere therefore resembled a normal Lens home fixture.

For PSG, the situation raised obvious questions about competitive fairness.

A neutral venue should, in principle, prevent either team from having a significant home advantage. But the crowd distribution at Bollaert-Delelis made that difficult to achieve.

LFP criticised over organisation

The LFP has faced particularly strong criticism because of the way the event was presented.

Lens reportedly retained its usual pre-match and half-time entertainment, further reinforcing the feeling that the match was being staged as a home fixture rather than a neutral Super Cup.

That contrasts sharply with previous editions.

When PSG faced Toulouse in the 2023 Trophee des Champions, the competition was staged at the Parc des Princes, but organisers reportedly made efforts to create a more neutral presentation, including a 50-50 distribution of supporters.

The contrast has therefore intensified the criticism of the LFP.

Lens’ victory overshadowed by controversy

From a sporting perspective, Lens deserve credit for their performance.

Thauvin’s goal gave them the lead, and they managed to protect it despite facing significant pressure and playing with fewer players for a lengthy period.

Defeating PSG in a major final is an achievement regardless of the circumstances.

However, the controversy surrounding the venue means much of the conversation after the match has focused on the LFP rather than Lens’ performance.

The absence of prominent figures including LFP president Vincent Labrune and PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaïfi from the stadium has also attracted attention.

What happens next?

The controversy could renew calls for the LFP to establish clearer rules around the location and organisation of the Trophee des Champions.

If the competition is intended to be a neutral showcase between the French league and cup champions, critics will argue that future editions should ensure a more balanced environment for both teams.

For Lens, however, the immediate priority will be celebrating.

They are the Trophee des Champions winners, and Florian Thauvin’s goal will go down as the moment that delivered the trophy.

But the LFP will have some serious questions to answer about why a supposedly neutral showpiece looked so much like a home game.
