Alexia Putellas’ stunning London City move headlines biggest transfers of the 2026 women’s summer window
The 2026 women’s summer transfer window is already producing headline-grabbing moves, but none have captured attention quite like Alexia Putellas’ sensational switch from Barcelona to London City Lionesses.
The two-time Ballon d’Or winner’s arrival in England headlines an increasingly busy transfer window that has also seen Arsenal strengthen with the additions of Geraldine Reuteler and Selina Cerci, as Europe’s elite prepare for another fiercely competitive campaign.
London City land the biggest signing of the summer
Few expected Putellas to leave Barcelona after 14 trophy-laden years, but the Spanish superstar has chosen a fresh challenge in the Women’s Super League.
For Barcelona, losing arguably the greatest player in the club’s history is an undeniable setback. However, with Putellas seeking a new adventure and unwilling to join a direct European rival, the Catalan giants can now begin planning for life after their iconic captain.
For London City, though, the move represents one of the biggest transfer coups in women’s football history.
Having finished sixth in their debut WSL campaign, Michele Kang’s ambitious project has sent a statement to the rest of Europe by securing one of the game’s greatest players.
The arrival of Putellas could also help unlock the best version of Grace Geyoro, whose record-breaking move from Paris Saint-Germain failed to fully deliver during her first season in England.
A new challenge for a Barcelona legend
Putellas departs Barcelona after completing virtually every major honour available, including another historic quadruple.
Her move to London City offers a fresh challenge without the burden of European football, potentially allowing her to manage her workload ahead of next summer’s FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The financial package is also expected to rank among the most lucrative in women’s football, further underlining London’s growing ambition.
Arsenal quietly strengthen midfield with Reuteler
While Putellas grabbed the headlines, Arsenal completed one of the smartest free transfers of the summer by signing Switzerland international Geraldine Reuteler from Eintracht Frankfurt.
The versatile midfielder had attracted interest from the Gunners last year before eventually arriving on a free transfer following the expiry of her contract.
Reuteler provides valuable depth across multiple midfield positions and gives manager Renée Slegers greater tactical flexibility as Arsenal prepare to compete on several fronts.
Although less glamorous than some blockbuster arrivals, it could prove one of the window’s smartest pieces of business.
Cerci adds firepower to Arsenal attack
Arsenal also strengthened their forward line with the signing of prolific Germany striker Selina Cerci.
Cerci leaves Hoffenheim after becoming the Bundesliga’s leading scorer across the past two seasons, although her former club receive no transfer fee due to her contract expiring.
The move gives Arsenal another dangerous attacking option alongside Alessia Russo and Stina Blackstenius, with Cerci capable of operating centrally or from wide areas.
The main question surrounding the transfer is whether regular minutes will be available ahead of next year’s World Cup, but Arsenal’s packed fixture schedule should provide plenty of opportunities.
Women’s transfer market reaches another level
The Putellas deal is another clear sign of the rapid growth of the women’s game.
After London City previously shattered the world transfer record to sign Grace Geyoro, they have now secured arguably the biggest individual signing in Women’s Super League history.
With more major deals still expected before the window closes, the summer of 2026 is already shaping up as one of the most significant transfer periods women’s football has ever witnessed.
