Gabriel Magalhaes credits Arsenal tactics after Casemiro assist helps Brazil complete World Cup comeback
Gabriel Magalhaes has credited Arsenal’s attacking philosophy for helping him produce a crucial assist during Brazil’s dramatic World Cup round of 32 victory over Japan.
The centre-back revealed that the tactical demands placed on him at club level gave him the confidence to push forward and create Casemiro’s vital equaliser before Gabriel Martinelli completed Brazil’s comeback.
Gabriel sparks Brazil comeback
Brazil looked to be heading for a shock exit in Houston before Gabriel stepped up with a decisive contribution.
With the Selecao trailing, the Arsenal defender surged forward and picked out Casemiro, whose powerful header brought Carlo Ancelotti’s side back into the contest and shifted the momentum in Brazil’s favour.
According to UOL, Gabriel believes his ability to influence the game in advanced areas stems directly from the role he performs every week in north London.
Arsenal’s system prepared him for the moment
Speaking after the match, Gabriel explained that Arsenal’s aggressive tactical approach has encouraged him to become increasingly comfortable operating high up the pitch.
“It is something I work on at Arsenal,” Gabriel said.
The Brazilian defender added that Arsenal’s high defensive line regularly places him in advanced positions, allowing him to recognise attacking opportunities and contribute in possession.
That awareness proved decisive against Japan, as he spotted Casemiro’s movement before delivering the perfectly weighted pass that reignited Brazil’s World Cup campaign.
Martinelli completes the turnaround
After Casemiro restored parity, another Arsenal star delivered the decisive moment.
Gabriel Martinelli scored the winning goal to complete Brazil’s comeback and book their place in the World Cup round of 16, capping a memorable afternoon for Arsenal’s Brazilian contingent.
Gabriel admitted he was delighted to see his club team-mate make the difference on the biggest stage, praising Martinelli’s impact after another influential display.
Brazil’s resilience ensured they overturned an early deficit to keep their World Cup hopes alive, with Arsenal’s familiar understanding playing a key role in one of the tournament’s most dramatic knockout victories so far.
