Jadon Sancho officially leaves Manchester United after disappointing five-year spell as Red Devils confirm exit

Manchester United have officially confirmed the departure of Jadon Sancho, ending the winger’s disappointing five-year stay at Old Trafford.

The 26-year-old leaves as a free agent after his contract expired, closing the chapter on a move that once promised so much but ultimately failed to deliver on expectations.

United confirm Sancho departure

Sancho arrived from Borussia Dortmund in 2021 for a fee worth more than £70 million and was widely viewed as one of Europe’s brightest attacking talents. However, he struggled to consistently reproduce the form that made him a star in the Bundesliga.

Across 83 appearances for the Red Devils, Sancho managed 12 goals and six assists while enduring an inconsistent spell that included injury setbacks, fluctuating form and well-documented issues away from the pitch.

Manchester United confirmed his departure as part of their retained list announcement.

A transfer that never lived up to expectations

Sancho’s exit brings an end to one of the most expensive and frustrating transfer deals in the club’s recent history.

Former United striker Louis Saha previously described the winger as “the most disappointing signing in Manchester United history”, citing the enormous gap between the performances Sancho produced in Germany and those seen in England.

Saha admitted it remained difficult to understand why a player with such obvious technical ability failed to establish himself as a key figure at Old Trafford.

Bundesliga return increasingly likely

Despite his struggles in the Premier League, Sancho’s reputation remains strong in Germany.

Reports suggest Borussia Dortmund are interested in bringing the England international back to Signal Iduna Park for a third spell after his successful previous stints with the club.

Sancho enjoyed the best football of his career in Dortmund colours, registering 114 goal contributions in 137 matches during his first spell before returning on loan in 2024 and helping the club reach the Champions League final.

A permanent return to the Bundesliga could offer the fresh start he needs as he looks to rebuild his career and potentially force his way back into the England setup.
