Revealed: Man Utd’s Four-Player Shortlist To Replace Casemiro As Three England Stars Emerge As Targets
Manchester United are preparing for a major midfield transition as club legend Casemiro edges closer to the exit door. With the Brazilian set to become a free agent this summer, the Red Devils have reportedly drawn up a four-man shortlist to replace the Champions League-winning midfielder — and three England stars are firmly in the frame.
This potential reshuffle signals another important rebuild phase at Old Trafford as United look to inject youth, energy, and long-term value into their engine room.
Casemiro’s Exit Confirmed As Contract Runs Down
Casemiro arrived at Manchester United in 2022 in a blockbuster £60 million move from Real Madrid, bringing elite pedigree, leadership, and big-game experience. By the end of the season, he is expected to surpass 150 appearances for the club.
However, United have decided against activating a one-year extension in the 33-year-old’s contract. With Casemiro reportedly earning around £350,000 per week, the club is keen to reduce wage costs while planning for the future.
Despite helping United lift the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, Casemiro has been unable to restore the club to Premier League title contention — a factor believed to have influenced the decision.
United’s Priority: A New No.6
According to reports, Manchester United see the signing of a new defensive midfielder as a top priority. While cutting costs on wages, the club is expected to sanction another major transfer fee to secure the right profile.
Four Premier League midfielders have emerged as serious contenders.
Ranked: Man Utd’s Four Midfield Targets
1. Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace)
Arguably the standout option on the list, Wharton has impressed with his composure, tactical intelligence, and ability to control games despite his young age. Already an England international, he fits the profile of a modern No.6 capable of growing into a leadership role.
2. Elliot Anderson (Nottingham Forest)
Anderson’s versatility, work rate, and Premier League experience make him an attractive long-term option. United are closely monitoring his development, viewing him as a midfielder who can contribute both defensively and offensively.
3. Alex Scott (Bournemouth)
A highly-rated England prospect, Scott’s energy and technical ability have made him one of the most exciting young midfielders in the league. While not a traditional defensive midfielder, his intelligence and mobility add tactical flexibility.
4. Carlos Baleba (Brighton)
Baleba has been on United’s radar since last summer. The Brighton midfielder combines physical presence with strong ball progression, but a move is considered unlikely in the short term due to uncertainty surrounding United’s managerial situation.
Casemiro’s Emotional Farewell Begins
While no extension has been agreed — even on reduced terms — Casemiro remains fully committed to finishing his United career on a high.
“I will carry Manchester United with me throughout my entire life,” the Brazilian said. “There are many more memories to create during the next four months. My focus remains on giving my everything for the club.”
He later added on Instagram that he will always be “Forever a Red Devil,” a sentiment that reflects his deep connection with the club and its supporters.
What This Means For Manchester United
Replacing Casemiro will not be easy. His experience, winning mentality, and leadership leave big boots to fill. However, United’s shortlist suggests a clear shift toward younger, Premier League-proven talent capable of shaping the club’s midfield for years to come.
As the summer transfer window approaches, all eyes will be on Old Trafford — and on which name ultimately gets the nod.
