“Anarchy On The Pitch” – Ian Darke Calls On CAF To Replay Controversial AFCON 2025 Final
A storm of controversy continues to surround the AFCON 2025 final, with one of football’s most respected voices now calling for unprecedented action. Renowned ESPN commentator Ian Darke has urged the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to replay the final following what he described as “unacceptable anarchy” during Senegal’s dramatic victory over Morocco.
The showpiece event in Rabat descended into chaos during second-half stoppage time when Senegal’s players staged a prolonged walk-off protest that halted the match for a staggering 17 minutes. Despite the disruption, the game resumed and Senegal went on to claim the title in extra time—an outcome Darke believes should not stand.
“You Can’t Walk Off And Win A Final”
Darke did not hold back in his post-match assessment, taking to social media and broadcast analysis to voice his frustration.
While acknowledging Senegal’s quality as a footballing nation, he insisted that allowing a team to abandon the pitch and still be crowned champions sets a dangerous precedent for the game.
According to Darke, CAF must either order a replay or award Morocco a 3–0 victory, arguing that failure to act decisively would undermine the very foundations of competitive football.
Global Backing For Strong Sanctions
Darke’s position aligns with growing criticism from across the football world. FIFA President Gianni Infantino reportedly condemned the “ugly scenes” that unfolded, adding further pressure on CAF to take firm disciplinary action.
Morocco head coach Walid Regragui also weighed in, suggesting that the extended delay played a psychological role in Brahim Díaz’s crucial penalty miss, stating the player was visibly unsettled by the long stoppage.
Pundits and analysts warn that if CAF allows the result to stand without severe consequences, teams in future tournaments may weaponize walk-offs as a tactical ploy to disrupt momentum.
CAF Under Intense Pressure
CAF has confirmed it is reviewing footage and official reports from the incident. While replaying a completed continental final would be a near-unprecedented move—often described as the “nuclear option”—the governing body is under intense scrutiny to protect the integrity of African football.
Possible sanctions reportedly under consideration include:
-
Heavy fines for the Senegalese Football Federation
-
Lengthy coaching bans for manager Pape Thiaw
-
Player suspensions for those involved in confrontations with match officials
A Trophy Overshadowed By Controversy
For Senegal’s Teranga Lions, what should have been a historic celebration now sits under a cloud of debate. As calls grow louder for decisive action, many echo Darke’s warning that “the very essence of football” was placed at risk on one of Africa’s biggest stages.
CAF’s decision in the coming days may not only define this tournament—but also set a precedent for how far teams can go before sporting order collapses.
