Thomas Muller Reveals He Nearly Joined Barcelona Before MLS Move To Vancouver Whitecaps
Thomas Muller’s next chapter in football has been nothing short of fascinating. After spending his entire career at Bayern Munich, the legendary German forward packed his bags for North America to join the Vancouver Whitecaps — but things could have gone very differently.
In a candid interview, Muller revealed that before making his MLS switch, he seriously considered a move to Barcelona. Imagine Muller linking up with his former manager Hansi Flick at Camp Nou — the thought alone sends goosebumps down the spine of every football romantic.
“I could have imagined a future at Barcelona,” Muller confessed. “If Hansi Flick, who knows me very well, had called me and I had liked the project, I could have imagined something like this. It’s a top-level club where you know what people expect from you.”
That’s classic Muller — honest, playful, and confident. He’s faced Barcelona ten times in his career, scoring eight goals and winning eight of those matches. It’s no surprise he has a soft spot for the Blaugrana.
A legendary exit from Bayern Munich
Muller’s departure from Bayern was emotional. After 25 years, 756 appearances, and 250 goals, the club’s all-time record appearance holder knew it was time for a new challenge. The rise of Jamal Musiala and his own desire for a fresh experience made the move to MLS feel right.
“The overall package just worked,” Muller shared. “The discussions with the Vancouver Whitecaps were honest and clear — that’s something I’ve always valued.”
Thriving in North America
So far, Muller’s Vancouver adventure has been a dream start. He’s already helped the Whitecaps win the Canadian Championship, scoring and assisting in the final. With eight goals in eight games and a direct goal contribution every 68 minutes, the 36-year-old proves he still has the magic touch.
And here’s a fun fact — with his latest triumph, Muller has surpassed Toni Kroos as the most decorated German footballer in history with 35 titles. From Munich to Vancouver, his trophy cabinet keeps growing.
The legacy lives on
Whether at the Allianz Arena or BC Place, Thomas Muller’s impact on football remains unmatched. His decision to explore new frontiers reflects the modern spirit of the game — global, bold, and ever-evolving.
From almost wearing the famous Blaugrana colors to dominating the MLS, Muller continues to show why he’s a true student of the sport and a master of the moment.
