Wayne Rooney Questions Alexander Isak’s Form At Liverpool, Says He Doesn’t Deserve To Start Ahead Of Ekitike
Former England and Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has voiced his concerns about Alexander Isak’s form since joining Liverpool from Newcastle United in a record-breaking £125 million deal.
The 25-year-old Swedish striker has managed just one goal in seven appearances across all competitions — and that came in the League Cup. His goal drought continued in Liverpool’s recent defeat to Manchester United at Anfield, marking his third straight Premier League start without scoring.
Meanwhile, his striking partner Hugo Ekitike has been in sharper form, scoring four goals for the Reds this season, including three in the league.
On The Wayne Rooney Show, the football legend didn’t hold back:
“I wouldn’t play Isak. He hasn’t looked ready since coming from Newcastle,” Rooney said.
“He hasn’t trained properly or had a pre-season — and that’s crucial. While Newcastle were training, he was probably sat at home on the phone to his agent for six hours a day trying to get a move.
It’s so difficult when you don’t have a pre-season. He might’ve done stuff by himself, but he’s paying the price for it.”
Rooney concluded that Isak’s current performances don’t justify starting ahead of Ekitike, whose energy and finishing have given Liverpool an attacking edge.
With pressure mounting and fans demanding more from their £125m man, all eyes will be on Jurgen Klopp’s next lineup — will Isak keep his place or make way for the in-form Ekitike?
