Antoine Griezmann scores on Orlando City debut ahead of Lionel Messi MLS reunion

Antoine Griezmann made an immediate impact in Major League Soccer preparations by scoring and providing an assist on his Orlando City debut, while admitting he is eagerly anticipating another meeting with Lionel Messi.

The French forward starred as Orlando City cruised to a convincing pre-season victory ahead of the MLS campaign.

Dream debut for Griezmann

Griezmann enjoyed a perfect start to life in the United States as Orlando City thrashed the Tampa Bay Rowdies 6-0 in a pre-season friendly at Inter&Co Stadium.

The 35-year-old, who joined the club in late June, was handed his first start by interim head coach Martin Perelman and wasted little time making his mark.

The former Atletico Madrid striker opened the scoring in the 32nd minute with a composed low finish before turning provider after the break, setting up Ivan Angulo with a superb assist in the 61st minute.

His all-round display gave Orlando supporters an exciting glimpse of what he can bring ahead of the new MLS season.

Excited for Messi reunion

Before making his debut, Griezmann admitted one fixture had already caught his attention—the Florida derby against Inter Miami.

The Frenchman is looking forward to renewing acquaintances with former Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi and ex-Atletico Madrid midfielder Rodrigo De Paul.

“They’ve told me a lot about the derby. I watched the last one,” Griezmann said.

“It’ll be a joy to face Messi again, and also Rodrigo, who I have a very good relationship with.”

Orlando boosted by marquee arrival

Griezmann’s arrival is expected to significantly strengthen Orlando City’s attack as the club aims to challenge in the Eastern Conference.

His experience at the highest level, coupled with his creativity and finishing ability, was evident during an impressive debut outing.

If his first appearance is any indication, Orlando fans have every reason to be optimistic ahead of what promises to be an exciting MLS campaign—one that will include another high-profile showdown with Messi.
